Surprised Tim Robinson is at St Andrews for a pretty meaningless mid table clash.

Congrats to all appointed to the final!

I wonder if this will be Illingworths last international match before he possibly retires?

It seems that if anyone is to leave the panel Nogajski, is in the next in line.

Tbh I think it is very difficult to find any logic with ICC appointments sometimes. In last years Champions Trophy, the TV umpires in the semi finals were Joel Wilson (Also TV umpire in final) and Michael Gough, a few weeks later both were removed from the elite panel!

4
If England qualify for the final then one of the umpires for the final won’t have officiated on field in a semi final. I can’t remember the last time this happened in an ICC final.

Im also a bit surprised that Paleker has a semi final as he was only given 1 super eight game on field. I don’t think Menon has had a good tournament or been at his best in the last few months so surprised he gets a game as TV umpire.

Finally Kettleborough wasn’t involved in last year’s champions trophy semi finals and final, perhaps he is falling down the ICC rankings?

5
The ICC are lucky that Kettleborough, Gaffaney and Dharmasena should all be around for a while longer yet if their performances don’t drop and they don’t decide to leave the elite panel for any other reason.

The ICC should start planning for who will replace Illingworth and Tucker in semi and final appointments though and not of the other elite umpires stand out at the moment….

Cup Appointments / Re: The Emirates FA Cup - 2025/2026

Tierney takes the middle at Birmingham - hopefully not a bad injury for Hooper if it is one.

‘Smart Appointing’ has been quite a hot topic among us contributors on here this season but in my opinion, this is another case.

Paul Tierney, a referee who has been out for a whole season with what we presume was an awful injury and has spent so long getting close to full fitness, is given three games within a week. Manchester City v Fulham on Wednesday, Birmingham v Leeds - a game which I imagine will be very intense and end to end - and then Wolves v Arsenal on Wednesday.

Like Tierney hasn’t refereed two games in a week in a long time and seems incredibly irresponsible to give him another on Sunday which would make it three.

Was there no one else available that could have had this game? I find that very difficult to comprehend. If Tierney’s injury comes back to haunt him after this 3 game week, whose responsibility is it? Definitely the PGMO. Just more thought required.

Would have made much more sense to move Pawson to the middle and have Tierney or another on the boards.

I think its too early but the team at St Andrews would be one that is eligible for the Carabao Cup Final.

Holmes did the league cup final in 2016, but that team is eligible for the FA cup final….

I find these appointments quite strange!

I think Ananthapadmanabhan and Wimalasiri are only appointed as they are both from the host countries and are simply making up the numbers. Ananthapadmanabhan is only umpiring games between associate members.

Im also surprised that Knights has been chosen over fellow Kiwi Shaun Haig, Knights is 55 so has no real chance of ever been on the elite panel whereas Haig still has age on his side.

There aren’t that many stand out games in this stage of the competition so it is surprising but also pleasing that Roly Black is appointed on field for the New Zealand V South Africa game. Also Donovan Koch is on field for the England v West Indies game which is a decent appointment for him.

10
Today’s match between Sri Lanka and England was due to be umpired by Tucker and Wimalasiri, however part through Englands innings Tucker was replaced by 4th Kottahachchi due to illness.

11
It might be over for Asif Yaqoob  and Rashid Riaz if Pakistan pull out. They really might have to bring back Joel Wilson

Going by the Pakistan v Australia T20 appointments, I don’t think Riaz was planned for the World Cup. Seems pretty clear that Yaqoob was planned though.

For what it’s worth, I reckon Illingworth will retire from the elite panel after the T20 World Cup. Apart from the 100 test mark which seems unlikely that he’ll reach, he has no more major milestones left to tick off. My opinion is that Chris Brown is next in line to be appointed to the elite panel.

I think Tucker will at least want to Umpire the 50 Over World Cup in 2027. I remember listening to him on a podcast where he stated he would have umpired the 2015 and 2023 finals if Australia didn’t make it, which of course they did! So I reckon he’ll want one more opportunity to umpire the 50 over final. Of course ICC could remove him when they review the panel this year….I hope not as I think he’s a good umpire.

Thought the umpiring in the Ashes was generally fine, apart from the Snicko drama!

I was a bit disappointed with the umpiring of Menon and also there was some iffy decisions from Gaffaney in the last test.

Holdstock and Raza who I consider two of the weaker members of the elite panel both had good series in my opinion and exceeded my expectations.

For the first time in a long time, I’m going to watch Ipswich play in the flesh and I’m very excited to see Tom Kirk in the middle for that one. One of the stars of the season thus far and hopefully he’ll be great.

Kitchen returns to St Andrews for the first time since opening weekend. Not sure he’ll be greeted warmly by the crowd.

Jacob Miles with another game too.

Kitchen refereed Birmingham v Portsmouth at St Andrews on 1st November. I’d say there was hardly any reaction to him from the crowd. It did help Birmingham won 4-0 and he awarded Birmingham a penalty after about 5 minutes!

As per Cricket Australia, officials for first ashes test have been confirmed. They are as predicted.

Adrian Holdstock and Nitin Menon (on-field)
Sharfuddoula Saikat (third)
Shawn Craig (fourth)
Ranjan Madugalle (match referee)
