Some changes to the appointments.
A Madley replaces Taylor on Sheffield United v Burnley, with Robinson replacing Madley as VAR.
Taylor replaces Kavanaugh for Everton v Nottingham Forest, with Stroud replacing Taylor as 4th official.
I think that’s all!

With regards to Illingworth, I’m sure the rule was that you had to leave the panel before turning 61 (I remember reading something along those lines when Bruce Oxenford retired). With Illingworth turning 61 in August, I wondered if he might leave after the World T20 and be replaced immediately, similar to Oxenford replacing Taufel in 2012?
Ian Gould retired when he was 61, he turned 62 the month after he retired. Steve Davis retired when he was 62. I don’t think that there’s a set age for retirement, but I reckon it is more than likely Illingworth will retire from the elite panel in the next year or so.

I assume this means Illingworth will stay on the panel until next year. Will be interesting to see who is appointed to the World T 20 in June, usually gives a good indication who’s in the frame to be promoted to the elite panel.

Also believe it was Sam Lewis running the line at St Andrew’s last night rather than James Wilson.

I have no view on Mr Gill as I have not seen him ref. With the age profile of SG1 only Graham Scott seems close to retirement and Barrott has in effect replaced him. Six others (including Gill) have had trial games, so unless other established refs go or the pool expanded, there are bound to be some disappointments. How these are managed is paramount to ensure confidence is not knocked. The promotion of Bond in particular appears odd from last year, given the profusion of promotions this year. I am clearly missing something.
Given that every Premier League match requires three referees (on-field, 4thers and VAR) and three ARs (2 x on-field and an AVAR) an expansion of the panel is not such a bad idea. It might prevent burn-out and will reduce the instances of referees high-tailing it from a game on Saturday to another on Sunday. We would not ask a player to do that, neither should a match official.
Agree we wouldn't ask a player to play or a referee to be on-field on 2 consecutive days, however I see no problem with say an on field referee on a Saturday game in London or the South, then being a VAR on a Sunday , or vice versa. I don't think that is excessive at all to ask of full time working employees.
The Premier League is an outlier in Europe though in terms of referees doing on field and VAR on the same weekend. In most major European leagues, referee’s do one or the other but not both.

Sad to see Erasmus depart the international scene, he’s been a top umpire for a number years. I wonder if we’ll see any others retire from the elite panel?

First derby for Madley in Manchester, and Barrott with another top flight tv offering.
Interesting that Sam Allison has been designated what was a missing SG1 appointment with SG1 assistants in the M4 derby.
Oliver and Coote with the other tv games. Klopp with a chance to see Tierney once again 😳
I wonder if Craig Taylor is in for Hatzidakis now as a semi permanent replacement given he is now in the middle more.
Craig Taylor is also down to officiate the championship game on Saturday between Birmingham and Southampton.

There are a few ‘low profile’ series coming up, Afghanistan v Ireland, Bangladesh v Sri Lanka & Bangladesh v Zimbabwe. They would be good series to test some other umpires.

Surely when the ICC review the elite panel they have to drop Joel Wilson….he seems to have almost every decision he makes overturned!
I think 4 of his decisions overturned in this test match already and day 3 hasn’t been completed yet! I think what may save Wilson is the retirement of others in the next few years, Illingworth, Erasmus and Tucker.

Quite an achievement for Tim Robinson to be 4O in his first year in SG1!

I agree 5/6 are the best officials available but would have preferred Raza to Wilson. No great surprises - returns for Dharmasena and Gaffaney after the World Cup, all highly experienced umpires utilised.
On a separate note, if officials have to leave before they turn 61 (which I believe is the precedent if not a rule - happy to be corrected on this), then Erasmus, Illingworth and Tucker will be leaving fairly soon. Did wonder if they might have given experience of this intense kind of series to one of the lesser experienced umps.
I believe there are political issues preventing Pakistani umpires officiating in India outside of ICC events. I know Raza had issues getting his visa before last years over 50 World Cup. Aleem Dar also didn’t umpire in India after the 2016 T20 World Cup.
