Cup Appointments / Re: 2023 community shield
« on: Fri 14 Jul 2023 13:51 »
I’d have thought that Attwell is one of if not the favourite for next seasons FA cup final. Is there precedent for someone doing the community shield and fa cup final in the same season?

Yep as you say there’s likely to be a lot of changes to the elite panel in the next few years so it’s vital that they blood some new umpires.

I agree with the international panel umpires you say will definitely go to the World Cup, I’d also add Wharf to that list.

I don’t think Palliyaguruge should go, he’s been to the last two world cups and not made it to the elite panel in the meantime umpires like Menon and Holdstock have clearly overtook him. I also wouldn’t take Dar, it’s time to give someone else a chance. Think Sharfuddoula could be in with a chance.

I must say that is a very good appointment for Alex Wharf - being prepared as a replacement for Illingworth?

My thoughts exactly, Illingworth is 60 in August so will probably be coming off the elite panel in the next few years.

Will be interesting to see which international panel umpires go to the ODI World Cup later this year.

Unexpected to see Raza get 2 games! Would have preferred Erasmus & Gaffaney on field for the first test. Think this is Raza’s first test outside Pakistan.

The Ashes appointments will be Ahsan Raza's 8th & 9th Test matches. He was added to the Elite Panel last March when Aleem Dar retired.

Yes, I was aware of that. My point being I don’t think appointing him to the first test of the Ashes is the best idea as he hasn’t umpired a test outside of Pakistan before and his generally inexperienced in tests.

In 2019, the ICC appointed Wilson who was newly appointed to the elite to the first Ashes test. He and his partner Dar had a shocker which set the tone for the rest of the series. I hope Raza does well I have nothing against him, but if he does badly the ICC are opening themselves up for criticism.

World Test Championship Final

Australia v India - The Oval, 7th-11th June 2023

Match referee - Richie Richardson (West Indies)
On field - Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand) & Richard Illingworth (England)
TV - Richard Kettleborough (England)
Reserve - Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka)

With the Ashes starting just 5 days later, this appointment suggests Dharmasena & Gaffaney will be involved in the 1st test.

Congratulations to all officials appointed. Slightly surprised Erasmus isn’t involved in this one

Few surprises for me in these appointments:

Bond on VAR for Brentford v Man City when Brentford have change to qualify for Europa Conference League. Believe it’s first time Bond has done VAR since 19/20 season. Maybe a game like Palace Forest would have been better.

Surprised cup final team don’t get a run out, but I suppose they want to shield them from any potential controversy.

James Bell as 4th official at Goodison Park, believe it’s his first season as an SG2 ref. I know there’s no other SG1 officials available but maybe a more experienced SG2 ref such as Stroud or Whitestone would have been better in case the unlikely happens to Attwell.

The appointments on Tuesday will be interesting.

With Oliver in the FL , Taylor will be at Everton in all likelihood.

I’d expect Kavanagh and Tierney to take the other two.

Also worth remembering there are 19 SG1 referees (I think) so with 10 games needing 10 referees and VARs, there has to be at least one non-SG1 referee with a middle, so it'll be interesting to see who that will be, especially given Robinson has L1 playoff, Bond and Madley are injured (?) and Smith had a PL appointment last weekend.

19 refs plus Swarbrick as VAR. So 10 SG1 on field and 10 on VAR assuming everyone is available.

Select Group - Premier League / Re: FL PlayOff 2023

Presumably
EFL Championship Play Off Final

Saturday 27th May 2023 – 4:45pm kick off
Luton Town v Coventry City
Wembley Stadium

Referee: Michael Oliver
Assistant Referees :  Stuart Burt & Lee Betts
4th official:  Graham Scott
Reserve AR: Mark Scholes
VAR: Andre Marriner
AVAR: Richard West

This doesn't make good readings for Scott, Marriner and maybe West. It has a feel of a final swansong for them. Meanwhile, Michael won't officiate in the PL after this Sunday again this year. Also, it puts Andre in prime position for a final day trip to Selhurst Park to say some possible goodbyes maybe in front of BMB 😭

Well presumably they know by now whether or not they're retiring at the end of the season!

I'm glad Oliver's got the PO final. As remarked recently, he's not had it previously. Presumably it would have bene someone else if Sunderland had made the final. It's also another match where Bennett isn't with him.

As you say, it means Oliver won't be refereeing on final day of PL season.

Ye I know I meant in terms of it looks like their time is ending.

Also I think Bennett might have done the game before so maybe that's why he's been fiscluded in recent week? Long shot but still

Pretty sure ARs and referees can and have done the play off final multiple times. Think Mike Dean did it about 3 times!

England v Ireland Test Match

Referee: Richie Richardson (West Indies)
On field: Adrian Holdstock (South Africa) & Paul Wilson (Australia)
TV: Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka)
4th: TBC

A further sign that pre-covid appointments are back?

Nice to see Holdstock and Wilson both stand in their first test match in England (if memory serves correctly!). Wonder if Holdstock has been given this match and will not be appointed to the ashes with Raza joining the established elite members?

I reckon with this appointment  Dharmasena will be involved in the WTC final, maybe with a couple of the English guys.

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if for the first 2 Ashes tests Erasmus and Gaffaney stand on field in both with Holdstock as TV umpire in both.

General Discussion / Re: Terrible Whistling in Spain

The referee is Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias, a La Liga referee since 2021.

100% agree with you on Wilson. But if English umpires aren’t to be used, he surely will be appointed as there aren’t that many other candidates as you say.

Will be interesting to see how many games Raza or Holdstock get. One of them will surely get at least 1 test onfield as I don’t think it will be a good idea appointing just 4 umpires (Erasmus, Dharmasena, Gaffaney and Menon) to a 5 match series!

Andy Madley replaces Darren England on Leicester v Wolves. Darren England replaces Andy Madley as VAR for Palace vs Everton.
