Fourth Round Proper
Sun 18th Jan 2026 AFC Bournemouth Women (First Team) v Manchester City Women FC (First Team) F.A. Womens Cup Referee: Dennington, Sophie Assistant Referee: Whiteman, Lauren Assistant Referee: Gill, Lucy Fourth Official: Broad, Ella
Really looking forward to this one.
Fantastic game. Girls v Ladies but so proud of everything AFCB Ladies have achieved over the 2 years or so. When the only defeat is against the best women's team domestically, that's pretty special.
Sophie Dennington was superb as well.
Well done to 3 amazing teams of ladies. Good Luck to Man City in the next round and beyond. Hope we see this team ref again as well.
Being someone who watches Brighton wsl as well as mens,L have seenSophie officate us twice and she is a rising star who I feel is going to the top
That's really good to hear.

Maybe someone has finally listened and given them a break! 4 of them are away the following week at the UEFA elite camp, as referees - 2 have games, 2 don't.

I shall be at the Amex on Saturday as Mrs Thing is an Everton fan… and finally get to see Kavanagh in the flesh.
Are you on purple watch again?
1/3 chance methinks..
No doubt those odds will reduce dramatically if bmb makes some pleading remarks on here!
I have submitted a written plea on your behalf TTFL. I said given the success of the lush purple last weekend you are desperate to see it on show in your game again this coming weekend. That was what you wanted me to request wasn't it?

To be completely honest there were many reasons I was a better Lino than ref, one of which involved my frequent stopwatch mishaps! I mean we’ve all done it but in my case it was far too many times, either forgetting to start it, forgetting to stop/reset at half time if I had by some miracle remembered to start it, forgetting to wind the backup watch up, starting one not the other. I never officiated at a level where there was any stadium clock to bail me out! I blame my referee coach, a teacher from my school who I idolised then and still do, rather than drumming it into me about remembering to start both watches, he used to just signal to me from the touch line when the 45+ was up!!

I started refereeing because of a very...err... erratic performance of Trevor Simpson (Sowerby Bridge) at Field Mill, thinking if I can't do better than that Gawd help me!
A couple of years later Mr Simpson spoke at the Mansfield Society of Referees, and I was asked to give the vote of thanks afterwards. I did, recalling the above in all it's glory to a pretty silent room.
Forty years on, I still wish I could rewind that clock, and were he still with us, profusely apologise to Mr Simpson for my brattish five minutes.
My reasons for taking up the whistle were similar. It was Tommy Ash (Rotherhithe) in a Southern League game at Welling United. I had a pop at him in the bar afterwards and he challenged me to put my money where my teenage mouth was. I did and ended up working with him a number of times - never really grew to like him, but did resepct his experience and match management. Fortunately none of my games has featured in this thread (yet!) but if any fans of Isthmain League clubs from about 1989 to 2006 visit this site, then I could be in a lot of trouble!!
I started out as a form of discipline! Just turned 13yr old bmb had been allowed to go to her 1st game alone, no daddy bmb to chaperone… I joined in the who’s you father song. Time I got home daddy bmb had been told by one of his many spies. He made me write the referee a letter of apology and literally dragged me to the post box to post it c/o the FA. After my one month grounding, served in full, I was sent on the next referee course to teach me discipline and respect. I was the youngest female to qualify at the time and held that record for over 20 years! It started a love for refereeing that has continued to grow over the years. No idea who the poor ref that day was but I would love to thank him!!

Only just seen this[should it be in ISOR?]
No because apparently, other than Michael Oliver, none of the modern lot have a clue - robotic, no feel for the games, error strewn performances unlike those from years gone by... /sarcasm Personally I put the shift in perception down to 24-36 cameras with HD slomo zoom in vs 1 shaky camera in the middle of the main stand, social media and the 24/7 conversation v a 3 lined report in the local paper and several other things I find so wrong in the modern game, not least of which was the money bringing in a dreadful culture change where the ref is always wrong, even if they're right! We all know what I mean. Just as many dreadful performances then as now, there's just not much footage available to remind us!! For me the worst performance ever was Iain Williamson can't remember who the game was against but bmb jr was mascot that night. Other than blowing the whistle to start the game, he got everything wrong - literally - for both teams, it was horrendous. One stand out moment was he went to book Warren Cummings for simulation until he was shown his shin pad that had shattered into about 20 pieces from the force of the tackle! Everyone on here was shocked as to the veracity of scathiness from me after the game as I do tend towards being lenient post match and trying to look for the positives! Spoke to him about it a couple of years or later over at Yeovil - very eye opening conversation. He told me no matter how many more games he did, that game would always be his lowest point and he knew it had all gone horribly wrong. Was a really good chat actually, very nice guy, very open and honest. We also talked about the psychology of it all and how difficult it is to regain your confidence after a game that dreadful. (One of the reasons I tend towards leniency/look for positives is I work within referee mental health, if a ref has made a poor call or had a poor game - they know, there's already enough people kicking them over it & they don't need me added to the list. I prefer to find the positives and try to help lift them back up, remind them they can do it etc.)

I don’t see the benefit of a countdown for goal kicks/throw ins. The six second rule was never enforced so by bringing it in for goalkeepers holding the ball it has improved that massively. Referees already caution if they feel there is excessive delaying the restart for throws/goal kicks without too much disagreement, so I can’t see how it solves anything.
Every game all I hear around me is fans yelling at the ref about how long it takes for a throw in to be taken. Granted there is an occasional booking, grabbing random meaningless figure maybe 1 throw in from 25 the yellow card comes out, the other 24 continue with the all too usual faff of, hand the ball over over to a team mate 3/4 times, stroll casually up the touchline, hand the ball to a team mate when sent back by the ref, change the ball over, have a little wipe with a towel or shirt, stroll the other way down the touchline, hand ball to team mate who's already got a different ball, wipe both with a towel, while deciding which ball to use, give one ball to a ball boy/girl, the other to a team mate and ask a different ball boy/girl for a ball. Meanwhile I've nipped out of the ground, gone to costa over in Poole, got a coffee, back to Bournemouth, snuck back into the ground, drunk my coffee and still the throw hasn't been taken!

I think the second half was really tricky to officiate, especially with Bournemouth players throwing themselves to the ground at virtually every opportunity (sorry bmb!). The play acting from Bournemouth at times was shocking and I felt sorry for Tierney with the amount of head injuries, cramp and other acts of time wasting he had to deal with.
I disagree there was embarrassing playacting - Eva was pushed, Scott was pushed and kicked in the face accidentally - that's hardly throwing themselves down. Tav doesn't go down without reason, like all teams we have those who do - Tav isn't one of them. Adli I think genuinely had cramp - not sure he's played a full game yet & I'd love to see his running stats/distance covered. Trouble is we play a high paced game and for a young player with very little PL experience it's too much for them physically. We used our only 2 senior subs (one who is returning from injury), then an 18 year old bought in for the development squad, leaving us with 4 academy players (one who we've had to recall from loan) and a senior gk on the bench. When we hit this stage last season (bench full of academy players) we went into our best spell of the season so fingers crossed...
That’s fair enough regarding the time wasting. It was just that, from a neutral perspective, at times it felt quite excessive although I do now realise how stretched your squad is so maybe I was a bit hasty with my original comment.
I do agree Alex Scott got an unfortunate kick to the face and obviously I don’t follow Bournemouth a lot so I couldn’t agree if certain players were ‘one of them’ but it is part and parcel of the game so I need to realise that. Tierney tried to let the game go as much as he could but his hands were tied in some instances when Bournemouth players were down.
Tav by the way is being assessed for a hamstring injury. Hopefully just a tweak at worst but another senior player who could now be out for an extended time, and the latter is looking the more likely. Not heard anything today about Adli but we all believe it was just cramp last night. Currently we have Justin Kluivert out until at least April, Ben Gannon-Doak has been out since Nov, possibly back in Feb, Tyler Adams (huge loss) out since Dec with a torn MCL, Enes Unal and David Brooks will both hopefully be back end of Jan/early Feb, Matai Akinmboni, out since November - no return date. Will Dennis out for goodness only knows how long although we have signed a back up keeper & are after another one, so that position is covered. And of course we sold Semenyo after his release clause was triggered! Ryan Christie, Lewis Cook, Alex Scott, Marcos Senesie and Veljko Milosavlijevic - the 18 year old who came on last night all returning from injury over this month so not yet match fit. It's a bit grim but we are used to that! We're not a team to use it for excuses or yell about how woe are we in the press like some others. Arsenal last year were crying in the press about having 7/8 I think it was out when they played us - we had 11 fit, 1 senior goalie on the bench and the rest were academy kids, that part didn't get mentioned! It's life when supporting a small team, we don't have the depth of squad, unlikely we ever will, our back ups are mostly academy & dev squad players. It is what it is. As put by my fellow Cherry: A tired, depleted Bournemouth side did what they could to slow it down and he proactively dealt with it using the only tools at his disposal. Immediately talked to the captain when Hill took a long time over a long throw in early in the second half. Petrovic wasn't allowed to have too many slow goal kicks before the card came out. Plenty of time was added on.
We will have Tóth Alex make his debut at the weekend, 20 yrs old, never played in the PL. We've also signed Ade Solanke - dev squad but will be getting a very early chance to be around the 1st team squad.

Bournemouth tried to waste time, which was dealt with as much as possible by Tierney, and it bit them in the behind after a worldie from Brighton.
Agree! Great goal though
