Non Footy Appointments / Re: 6 Nations Referees
« on: Sun 15 Mar 2026 19:47 »
I only saw the Ireland Scotland match. With my usual caveat of not being competent enough to make a judgement on technical decisions, I must say I thought Luke Pearce put in a brilliant refereeing display. His communication skills are second to none and the way he conducts himself is exemplary. For my money is is by far the best English referee, way ahead of Carley and Dickson and has the edge on Ridley. Quite why the powers-that-be don't agree with my assessment is a mystery to me. Either they perceive something lacking in his technical decision making or, as I suspect, it's something about off the field politics.

Brilliantly put Whistleblower, my very thoughts too. It remains a travesty that he never featured beyond the group stages in the last World Cup whilst the robotic, lack of empathy Carley and the erratic Dickson did, including running the line to WB in the Final.

Match at Woking off due to waterlogged pitch. Mel Burgin was due to referee. Last week she called off a game at Hartlepool for the same reason. Poor lass not having much luck.

Hoping to see Josh Smith with a PL game soon. Rate him highly and feel he is the better of the 2 Smiths

The “Kav” supporters club are a bit quiet tonight and rightly so, it was a very very poor performance. His assistant were poor too but I find it laughable that some posters are trying to blame most of the debacle on them rather than “Kav” as if he is beyond reproach?

As an aside does anyone else find this growing trend to call refs by these short names, as if they are their best pals, to be rather annoying. I noticed that recently that Simon Hooper is all of a sudden “Hoops”, Andy Madley “Mads” and I even saw Farai Hallam referred to as “Faz” recently.

Keith Butcher, Kendal landlord, listed his recreations as “deep sea fishing and breeding budgerigars”. I didn’t know Butch all that well - his spit and sawdust pub was not the greatest of attractions on our Friday night pub crawls- but I gather from those who knew him better that he didn’t keep budgies and had never picked up a rod in his life!
Incidentally he was colour blind - I think that was true - so had some sort of distinguishing marks on his cards

Name, shame, ban and convict.

If you watch closely the “fouled” player gets up to begin with but then decides to “die” and see what happens.
A bit of play acting I suspect

Disgraceful.
I seem to recall it was another Anglesey match (Amlwch Town?) a couple of seasons ago where a manager was found guilty of assaulting a young linesman, also caught on camera. I believe he rightly got a lifetime ban from football but only a suspended prison sentence, which was farcical given the nature of the attack. Let’s hope the football authorities and police are a bit stronger in this case.

Barry Knight - Ipswich v Bolton play off semi final second leg. An otherwise fine referee had about 5 head losses in a single half. That’s the one that sticks out and I have no connection to either team.

Novelty time. Never seen the words “Barry Knight” and “fine referee” in the same sentence before.

General Discussion / Worst performance ever

There is quite a lot of comment from irate posters on here about “worst performance ever”, “worst ever VAR intervention “ etc., perhaps posted in the heat of the moment.
I have recently been watching F A Cup Finals from the past on YouTube, mainly my era of p 70s, 80s and 90s. I still remain convinced that you would go a long way to beat the referee’s performance in the 1991 Final.
Our older posters I am sure will know what I am talking about. For our younger posters who won’t have seen the Final I have put a YouTube clip below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMPNrYKKUBg

To put into context the referee was Roger Milford - bouffant hairstyle, tanned legs, very short shorts, cheeky chappy grin, everyone’s friend supposedly but a bit of a poser. Paul Gascoigne was like something wound up and his behaviour ridiculous. The main points in the video are -

1. I min 30 secs a “foul” on Parker which is bordering on common assault and should have been red. Just a quiet word and a grin from Milford
2. 2min 50 secs a scything down of Charles, yellow at best but bordering on red. There was some karma in that Gascoigne came off worst and Forest scored from the free kick. But again nothing from our chirpy little ref.

Gascoigne should have walked without a doubt, Spurs would have been down to 10 men for most of the game and the result may have been different.

I still believe this to have been the worst dereliction of duty by a ref in all my days of watching football. Milford’s explanation that he “felt sorry for Gascoigne” beggars belief.

I seem to recall he came from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire.
As it was 100 years since the 1st F A Cup Final in 1872 I remember BBC news doing a short article with Mr Smith the week before. This was in the days of non professional referees and he was up a pole fixing wires as his day job was a telecom linesman.
I’ve got a funny feeling he took quite a few names in that Final too which was  a bit unheard of at the time

Ms Burgin is Refereeing at Altrincham on Tuesday evening

Seen the highlights and she was very firm and correct in issuing a red for DOGSO in the 16th min.

General Discussion / Re: Keith Hackett.........AGAIN !!!!!

Let me put it in a more discreet way. Keith Hackett was not known for an especially quick turn of speed or for covering every blade of grass on the pitch when he was refereeing.

I'm not really one for making New Year Resolutions but may I suggest that the marvellous RTR community makes a collective one for 2026; no mention at all of Keith Hackett. Not that I'm trying to censor lively debate of course

Keith who?

1. Peter Bankes will referee the Carabao Cup Final
2. Chris Kavanagh will referee the F A Cup Final
3. We will end the season still completely unsure as to what constitutes a penalty for hand ball and what doesn’t
4. Attendances at The World Cup will be low but the corrupt Infantino and completely disillusioned Trump will put spin on it to pass it off as the greatest show on earth
5. Melissa Burgin will continue to have the best legs in football

And the referee in the perfect position to see; it makes one wonder what goes through a referee's mind to make such a spectacularly bad decision. No doubt James Bell will have the opportunity to explain it to an Observer.

One hopes it’s a learning curve for him too, particularly as he is appearing as a VAR in some games, even though this is an EFL
contest.
I do often contemplate whether acting as a VAR affects your on field performance.

In no way am I claiming that officials who act as both VAR and on field officials are becoming less observant or lackadaisical on the field, but I do wonder whether the flip flopping between roles is a factor, particularly for EFL SG2 who do both.

Blimey. Read about it and wondered if folk were over reacting but just seen it now. Red every day of the week and Bell was in a good position so can’t claim his view was blocked.
