Why are we risking new referees on teams who are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the division. Bournemouth Sheff Utd / Wolves v Fulham would be a more appropriate match (no offense to fulham fan posters).

It's unfair on the teams involved and unnecessary pressure on the trial referees

Nothing again for Attwell, or Scott who's treatment this season has been nothing short of disgraceful!

Totally agree re the treatment of Scott, very poor on the part of PGMOL.
Just looked it up and he has only had 15 middles this year, of which only 2 have been in the PL , and he hasn’t had a game since 5th Feb

Seems to be in the Michael Oliver/Howard Webb/Mark Clattenberg mould in terms of being really good man manager and having a rapport with the players.

I don’t remember Clattenburg having any rapport with players but hey ho

Just with Ed Sheeran and himself I gather

I have 3P's for the officiating in week 3, I'm not one to trash officials as they have such a tough job BUT the standard has deteriorated from week 1 culminating in poor, pedantic and at times perplexing refereeing across the 3 matches. Have to say the debutants didn't impress in their matches. It's a shame really as I rate both Christophe and Andrea.

An unusually short assessment this time from Alfie. Really enjoy reading your detailed analysis of each game, the majority of which I can never argue with.
I didn’t see the Ireland v Wales game and only saw brief highlights of Scotland v England so can’t really comment. However saw the France v Italy game and, whilst one can probably find fault with the French players encroaching during the final penalty, I thought Ridley had a very good debut game, in fact in 2 separate newspaper reports the word “exemplary” has been used. Would be interested to know why Alfie felt it was not a good performance

This is quite bizarre and I suspect something fishy is going on. This will mean JJ will have had FIFTEEN 4th O appointments since the start of the year and only 1 middle. I don’t think he can be injured as, if he is, he couldn’t take over if the match referee were injured.
If someone at SG 2 is trying to make a disciplinary point then it seems a rather weird way of doing so. I can’t recall any of his games this season being so bad that he is being punished but maybe others can. As one of SG2’s most experienced and most reliable “safe hands” this doesn’t seem to stack up in my opinion.
Does anyone know who is responsible for SG2 appointments?

I was VERY jealous of Missy BMB having Jarred Gillett until I scrolled down and saw Michael Oliver for us at Old Trafford.

Whilst it may have been pre-arranged, I'm pretty shocked to see Lewis Smith with another PL game after the disaster at the Cottage on Saturday.

Disaster being the operative word. While some appointments this season have been refreshing there have also been some baffling ones and none bigger than this. Quite simply ridiculous imho.

OK, I give up. Linington with his ELEVENTH 4th O outing this year and only 1 middle. Quite bizarre, he must have really upset someone

3 yellow card offences by casemiro only 1 yellow given

About par for the course.

And what is worrying is that he is already being touted as this years F A Cup Final referee, not due to merit but because “its his turn next”.

And the likes of Whitestone, Webb, Linington and other competent SG2 refs must still be wondering what they do to even get a sniff if a PL game. I can’t honestly see any of them having such a melt down

JJ is 4th O at Leicester tonight, at Norwich on Saturday and at Ipswich next Tuesday. By my reckoning that makes 10 4th O outings this year and only 1 middle. I find that bizarre as surely if he was carrying an injury he would not be appointed in case the match referee were injured.
Can anyone explain this? bmb usually has some insider info which might shed some light

Congrats to Luke Pearce on 50 internationals. With Peyper's retirement Pearce is the most experienced international rugby referee. On Sunday, in what was not a hugely difficult game, it showed - the discussion last week was the difference between natural referees and manufactured (within football). Spend a couple of hours watching Pearce compared to Doleman and the difference is startling.
The English and Welsh packs knew they had fresh meat and exploited every.last bit out of it. The management of the set piece was pretty poor throughout, Doleman's communication will improve as his standing does but first the players have got to trust you.- if talking does not work, referee with the whistle. I have seen differing opinions on Chessum's YC - I felt he had bent at the waist and if it wasn't for the primary tackler causing the Welsh player to drop to his knees, Chessum would have taken the player around the stomach. Not sure what he could have done differently- the speed in which thr decision came back spoke volumes. James Doleman is not a bad referee, just not yet anywhere close to challenging O'Keefe or Williams
I thought Nic Berry was good, his talking/communication was better, more focused. I'm glad they looked at Baille's tackle more than as just an accumulation YC.
As for the final act there can be no blame on Berry - he was quite clear "I do not have a grounding- on field, no try"
We then seemed to spend ages between yes it was/no it wasn't- Andrew Cotters reference to Scottish Law was most pertinent "not proven". Had on field decision been Try, then try it would have been. Maybe this was the one where ref says I'm not sure, let me have another look" and it that case I think a try would have been given, certainly France could not have complained.
Overall 2 good/v good performances, 1 of continuing to grow/learn/improve

A very thorough and fair summary from RCG I feel and not much to add. Both Berry and Pearce have an excellent rapport with the players and use that to help them with game management.
I still feel Fords conversion decision should have been overturned and the kick retaken.

A fascinating watch, thanks for sharing. A number of things stand out for me -

1. The importance of families and family support. Many of the refs referred to the sacrifices made, not just by themselves but by their families too. The sheer nastiness and brutality of online abuse for all
2. The wonderful camaraderie among the group and the way they encouraged, supported and consoled one another.
3. Christian beliefs - Gardner having words from Philippians engraved on his whistle and Williams seen praying.
4. The sheer emotional impact - more than one ref in tearis or being choked up, especially Berry.
5. World Rugbys hierarchy of refs as seen before the quarter final appointments - Williams, Carley and Nika in the 3rd tier, which of course also means both Dickson and Pearce are rated better than Carley
6. Still a complete mystery why Pearce never featured in any capacity beyond the group stages
7. How both WR and O’Keefe himself admitted mistakes in the quarter final yet he was still given a semi. Somewhat odd.

Assuming the uncovered games are being refereed by SG1s, it seems strange that top SG2 James Linington has not got a game when others have two in a full fixture list, and particularly as he is a 4O so clearly not out of action for some reason.

Changes to last weekend appointments will provide a clue.

He was replaced at Watford on Saturday and then as 4O at Chelsea on Sunday. The fact he has a 4O appointment next week suggests it may have been a minor injury or sickness and he is hopefully being eased back gently. Bizarrely he has had 6 4O appointments so far in 2024 - 4 of them in the F A Cup - and only 1 middle wheres Andy Davies 😳 has had 4 middles in the same period

Another game for Rebecca Welch. Cue Smithy! 😳
