Non Footy Appointments / Gallagher Premiership Round 6
« on: Fri 17 Nov 2023 16:56 »
The 5 games this weekend are being refereed by Ridley, Leal, Dickson, Carley and Tempest so still no appearance from Luke Pearce since the quarter finals of the World Cup.
Given his surprising non appearance in the latter stages it does beg the question, which some of us wondered , as to whether he was carrying an injury. Otherwise his total omission still remains a mystery

Disgraceful challenge by Rashford and almost as bad was the way he and some of his colleagues laughed at the referee when the red card was given.

Carley, dickson foley Ridley and pearce to return poss next weekend

Would expect to see some, if not all, of them back in harness next week

Surely a much deserved MBE  awaits in the next honours list

My word, I’ve thought for a few months now that Darren England was being steadily groomed as successor to Taylor and Oliver but how his star has come crashing down following the VAR debacle at Spurs. Not sure if or how his status is going to fully recover
Rude!

Not intended to be, just a very honest observation

With the dust now settling on RWC 2023 I suspect it won’t be long before thoughts turn to 2027, both for the teams and for the officials. I am sure Joel Jutge and his team will be considering the make up of the refereeing panel, not least because there will be more teams and therefore potentially a bigger pool of officials needed.

Just to put a bit of background into this. 8 of the 12 referees from 2019 featured again this year, the only retirees since 2019 being Owens and the 3 Frenchmen Garces, Poite and Gauzere. Of the 4 additional referees, 3 of them featured as assistants in 2019 - Dickson, Carley and Brace. The only complete newbie among the 12 was Amushakeli.

If, and I know it’s a big if and highly unlikely, all 12 were still around and considered good enough in 2027 8 of them would be in their 40s - Barnes 48, Peyper 47, Raynal 46, Dickson 45, Berry, Carley and Gardner all 43 and Williams 42. Of the rest Pearce and Brace would be 39, O’Keefe 38 and Amushakeli 33. By comparison to other years that would constitute a quite elderly, if experienced, panel.

Turning to this years assistants, in 2027 Busby would be 41, Brousset 38, Doleman and Evans 36, Piradi 35, Ridley 34 and Way 32.

And so to my questions -
1. Who do we see from the referee panel retiring before 2027 or being “dropped”?
2. Do we see any of this years assistants pushing on strongly in the next 4 years?
3.  Will Piradi become the 1st Italian to referee a 6 Nations game and make the cut for 2027?
4. Is Brousset seen as the natural successor to Raynal?
5. Are there referees not mentioned above who might make a claim between now and 2027? For example I have seen good reports of Tual Trainini from France, who was their referee of the year last year; Ben Blain and Sam Grove-White are doing well in Scotland and may eclipse Adamson. Has Adamson’s chance gone after being overlooked this year or might he bounce back?

I wonder if we may get a feel for World Rugby’s thinking when the 6 Nations appointments are announced. It would be good to see a few new faces being trialed at an early stage, rather than simply falling back on the same old faces

My gut feeling is that if a good number of the 2023 referees were not around in 2027 the panel could look somewhat light weight.

I accept this is all mere speculation for now but I just wondered what some of our more esteemed rugby experts  - Alfie, RCG etc - felt might possibly happen in the next 4 years

Genuine question - what does Bruno Fernandes have to do to get a red? Going around in the final few mins like a petulant child, throwing himself into tackles and snarling at the officials. It beggars belief that he never seems to see red for his antics. A nasty individual

I'm still not a great fan of the new bunker system. I'd prefer it if  the on-field team at least could sometimes give a red card initially and then the bunker review could consider if it should be downgraded.

I've always found Barnes to be an excellent communicator. If the final was his last match as a referee then I wish him well with whatever he does next.

Incidentally, I think Nigel Owens was 48 when refereeing at the 2019 World Cup so presumably Barnes could continue to 2027 if he wished but it doesn't sound likely.

Owens was 44 when he reffed the 2015 Final. The oldest Final referee was Garces at 46 in 2019, the youngest Joubert at 34 in 2011. Bevan and Morrison were both 44 in 1991 and 1995 respectively, Watson was 41 in 1999 and 45 in 2003 and Rolland 44 in 2007. Fitzgerald in the 1st Final in 1987 was 39 I think. With Barnes also being 44 this seems to be the optimum age!

Barnes was excellent. I sensed a degree of sadness and sympathy on his face at having to give the red card given the magnitude of the decision.
The red card of course had an effect and once again I feel a world Rugby has to look at the way it addresses head tackles. I fully accept their reasoning in trying to eliminate head injuries and the longer term consequences in some cases and this was the right decision given the laws as they stand. But it is a man’s game, played by big men at a fast pace and collisions are going to happen. In a split second it can be almost impossible to change stance or direction. Cane was not guilty of deliberate foul play, just of getting his body shape wrong. I would much rather see red cards left for serious foul play and maybe such cases as Cane’s resulting in a longer sin binning rather than a permanent dismissal.
In the cold light of day there is something not right in my mind that a World Cup Final has probably hinged on a team losing a player after getting his shape wrong rather than being guilty of serious foul
I probably haven’t explained this as well as I should but I hope some of you will understand what I am trying to say.

Very interesting piece in today's Times by Stephen Jones saying that, in his opinion, Wayne Barnes is the greatest Rugby referee of all time. Quite a claim but in the end it's all just a matter of opinion.

If Luke Pearce is not injured and has just be overlooked then I think he has been treated very shabbily indeed.

Ditto re Luke Pearce, totally bizarre

Harrington and Bond are injured

Again. Unfortunate for both

A whole lot of intriguing questions spring to mind, many covered already -

1. Why has Pearce not been involved after the group stages? Most of us on here have been lauding him as the natural successor to Barnes, and quite rightly so, but surely his omission must be injury related as he is the only 1 of the 12 not to feature. He performed well in his 4 matches so, if it’s not injury related, it’s a complete mystery.
2. Do we now see a different hierarchy developing in English refereeing with Dickson and Carley ahead of Pearce? Staggering if so
3. And for me the most intriguing question - if England had held on and it had been an England v NZ final who would have got the nod? Does Berry’s appointment for the 3/4 games suggest him? And would the England quartet have got the 3/4 match or someone else? We will never know but it’s fascinating to speculate

Dallaglio saying in the post match interview that South Africa didn’t win it themselves, O’Keefe won it for them was very poor and very cheap in my opinion. At least that Maggie woman whoever she is thought it was a valid penalty to S A at the death
