Phil Neville, in his post match interview, said he thought the referee had not had control of the match all night. I fear this must be the disappointment talking because I thought Ms Alves Batista was impressive and had very good control. I particularly liked her way of inter-reacting with the players. It was also most gratifying to comment to Mrs W about my appreciation of the grace and charm of the referee; hitherto that has been Mrs W's prerogative.
I really don't like these "inch" offside decisions because I don't think that's the original point of having an offside rule but technically it was correct and if VAR is going to hone things down to such fine margins then I think it's a pity. Just my view but it's a shame to see a great move and a well taken goal ruled out by a margin which can have given hardly any material advantage to the attacker.
As to the penalty. It took me about six views of slow motion to see the very slight contact but I think it was a correct decision. So perhaps that is an argument for VAR marginal decisions after all.
The better team won I thought, but the Lionesses can be very proud of what they have achieved
