I've always been impressed when I've seen him as an on field referee too

2
First time we have had Oliver Mackey at Stockport. Has anyone seen him before?

3
He has referred 2 fixtures in National League North this season so can assume he has been Demoted to Step 2

Never seen him referee but find it bizarre he was one of the few newbies to get League One games last season but now suddenly isn't considered good enough presumably to do NL matches. Likewise with Scott Simpson who I have always been reasonably impressed with certainly at L1/2/NL level.

Barrott in a year or two. There's no reason why England can't develop three or four for the top tier like other countries.

Elliot Bell has had an excellent start to the season appointment wise. Two championship games and a decent L1 game (Blackpool v Huddersfield), especially considering he’s not in the supplementary list.

I’ll be in the away end at Preston so I’ll be able to see Matthew Donohue for the first time in person, one who seemed close to becoming a PL regular but has been unable to make it recently

Stockport v Bolton on the opening day as well. Only a matter of time before he's officially on that list

Always thought Scott Simpson was OK. Surely in the new structure he could discretely regain form in the NL as others have done in the past rather than drop two levels down.

I think the game times at Wycombe and Notts County have switched to avoid a clash with Nottingham Forest's match on the Sunday.

8
I wonder if the assistants are due to proximity of where they live as Stockport seem to have had Lewis Raper about four or five times this season as well. For the likes of Mather you can probably count yourself lucky to avoid them!

Marsden was a poor official in the National North circa 2015. How on earth he got promoted to the NL and then the FL shortly afterwards was baffling. With this new system he's got another shot at the FL now but seemingly never really improves.

10
I know what you're saying but it is a pretty big game with both teams harbouring playoff hopes plus it could possibly see a new manager in charge of Bolton. Personally think an experienced official is a good choice. They could have maybe selected someone who'd not done Bolton so recently albeit.

Cup Appointments / Re: The Emirates FA Cup - 2024/2025

I see what Tony ref is saying though. Yes I prefer others to be given a chance in the early rounds, but I think Tony is saying Charlton game should be going to someone like a Dean Whitestone / John Busby / instead of a newbie first year in the middle of a round 3, which could be too big for him ! I mean where are the established long term football league refs who deserve a chance at round 3

It seems somehow they are determined to push the likes of Ricardo in spite of recent mistakes like the Wrexham penalty rather than EFL stalwarts such as Carl Brook. You feel in the second half of the season the likes of Ricardo and others on the pathway will continue to get Championship appointments leading up to PL games down the line

It’s their occupation to be available and I am pretty sure they would be, my point is that a young referee is given a development opportunity (deservedly so) in Hertzeg and they give him a young inexperienced 4th official instead of an experienced colleague like Ward, Whitestone, Linnington or the like. I wish them all well and hope that no injuries occur and that none of the unknowns end up on the pitch.

Wouldn't be entirely surprised if Kennard Kettle got a game in the Championship this season as he appears to be on a similar path to Hallam and Ricardo and is popping up in League One quite a lot now

Always thought Copeland is a pretty steady ref whose been officiating in the NL for several years so does have experience of doing equivalent sized clubs like Wrexham, Stockport, Notts, Chesterfield etc although not in the FL.

14
And has popped up back in the FL this season and on BSM matches.

I thought he was very poor in the National North circa 2016 and was stunned to see him get elevated to the FL not long afterwards. In fairness he had improved a bit in games I saw after dropping down to the NL but does continue to court controversy like this game by the sounds of it.

The only NL refs from last year to appear in L1 are Ricardo, E. Bell and I think Hallam who were all clearly being pushed last season as well. As of yet anyone else has only done L2 games to date.
