I was quite surprised that there wasn’t a SG1 referee for Luton v Watford today, but it always seems to be SG2 in recent years. Not sure why because it’s always a difficult match to officiate.

There were a couple of errors which seemed to favour the home side but by and large I thought he put in a very accomplished performance.

I wonder if there might be a trial game for macho man in the PL soon…. He has had some decent appointments recently and seems to have passed each test with ease.

Probably too old at 44.  Older referees have been promoted in the past, but that was before the days of the ERDG.

I’ve seen him quite a few times since he became SG2. I’ve not really seen him have a substantially bad game, so I’d argue he would deserve some matches at PL level before long. Don’t think age should necessarily come into it.

The one blot on the copy book yesterday was I felt he was a little picky with some of the fouls he was giving… it was quite an aggressive game without doubt, but barely any set piece went by without some sort of foul being given.

Just wanted to share some positive feedback about JJ at Loftus Road yesterday afternoon. Thought he did really well. Authoritative, clear decision making and strong communication with players and thus stadium. Great positioning to allow for correct KMI call for the pen. Great performance.

I’m surprised Pompey has James linington as ref because of how close the Isle of Wight is to Pompey

You’d think it would have been mentioned before….

I never knew that! Clearly hasn’t been mentioned on this forum much in the many years I’ve been a member! 😜😜😜😛

Luton Town (First Team) v Sunderland AFC (First Team)
Football League Championship
Referee: Nield, Tom
Assistant Referee: Leach, Daniel
Assistant Referee: Jones, Matthew
Fourth Official: Duckworth, Edward

Good first half from Tom. Right at the end of the half, Dan Leach has given offside and disallowed a goal.  if it is for the flick on to morris, it is a very poor decision, if it is for the player on the keeper then I can understand it.

Really good game from mr nield, first time I’ve seen him ref but if he continues like that should easily be sg1 within 3 or 4 years

Nield was excellent throughout.likewise haven’t seen much of him before but was very good.that is an absolutely shocking decision by the ar to rule out Luton’s goal though and will somewhat tarnish the referees performance

Will Finnie perhaps next in the queue for SG2. Saw him a couple of times before he got onto the League List. I was impressed in a very positive way.

Was a bit disappointed with Will Finnie (Preston vs  Norwich) as he struggled with the pace of the game at times. He was hot and cold selling some decisions, this didn't help when he had let a similar situation go unpunished. I think he has the potential to progress but just needs a bit more time and experience to get up to pace with the Championship.

anyone else having noticed or agree that Stephen Martin seems to give an excessive amount of fouls compared to most other referees?

He is one of the fittest officials out there, so he probably gets into better positions to spot them!

We wouldn’t need VAR with Macho Man in the middle! 😜
