General Discussion / Norwich vs Coventry - Tom Kirk
« Last post by elbee94 on Mon 26 Jan 2026 20:49 »
Norwich City FC (First Team) v Coventry City FC (First Team)  Live on Sky Sports Football
Football League Championship
Referee: Kirk, Thomas
Assistant Referee: Bickerdike, Johnathon
Assistant Referee: Scholes, Mark
Fourth Official: Allison, Samuel

A really good first 30 minutes for Tom Kirk, I find his ability to not get fooled by playacting very good but a big black mark on the official’s report for a missed elbow by Thomas-Asante, which would have been a red card if spotted by Tom or Mark Scholes.

If you haven’t seen it, you haven’t seen it but potentially a very consequential decision.

I shall be at the Amex on Saturday as Mrs Thing is an Everton fan… and finally get to see Kavanagh in the flesh.

Are you on purple watch again?

1/3 chance methinks..

No doubt those odds will reduce dramatically if bmb makes some pleading remarks on here!

Surprised Tom Nield gets a game on TV with Derby County after the Wrexham match back in September, hopefully he has the contact lenses in this time

General Discussion / Re: Jarred Gillett - Newcastle v Aston Villa
« Last post by UmpireIan49 on Mon 26 Jan 2026 19:36 »
The only incident of note that I spotted on the highlights was when Joelinton committed a foul, Jarred Gillett played on as Villa had possession.

The Newcastle keeper had the ball and Gillett saw that two Villa players were down, one as a result of the foul by Joelinton.

Joelinton was cautioned correctly, though the crowd were incensed (when are they not?). The game was stopped for the treatment to both players.

Cannot comment on the rest of it but as I’ve alluded to many times on here, referees can’t win no matter what they do. The expectations that they have to be perfect will forever be ridiculous so as the referees are not perfect, the fans will continue to complain even if the performance was decent, as seems to be the case here.

By the way, Jarred Gillett is having a very good season, and seems to be trusted in these big games now. What fans think needs to come with a barrowload of salt.

Congratulations to all appointed to the second legs of efl cup semis.

Fully deserved appointments for all.

Guess the final will be between Gillett, Jones and England.

Martinez is an outstanding keeper but he is one of the worst cheats in the league.  Check ou the reaction of Konsa here to his antics.

In a match which had players from both sides going down and staying down at the slightest touch and, in my opinion, featured two sides who are very adept at the 'dark arts', I thought that Jarred Gillett did very well to keep the game flowing.

This was another PL game in which fans of both sides will criticise the officials for all and sundry, however, they really should be having a look at their own players who seem more intent on trying to con the officials rather than getting on with the game. It gets more tiresome every week and it is not just these two teams.

I thought he was really good. He did let a fair bit go, but it was for both sides. No issues here!

Apart from the penalty there were a couple of other odd decisions.  The clip above shows a corner where Donnarumma seems to have comfortably kept the ball in play.  Both the commentary on the City webpage and City fans at the match agree that this decision was given by the referee (some 25 yards away) and there was no flag by the Assistant referee.  Should have gone to Specsavers?

The other was a discretionary choice, but one that I have rarely seen.  Doku was fouled, a regular occurrence, firstly as he was moving forward he was forcibly pushed in the back causing him to fall forward and then as he fell a boot was planted on his ankle.  A yellow card was issued and Doku was treated on the pitch.  He was then sent to the sidelines and not allowed to return to the field immediately.  Now the treatment was on the long side and I know referees have discretion on this matter, but in the circumstances I would regard that as a harsh decision.
Certainly doesn’t look like it has gone out. But it’s hard to comment on who gives it based on that footage.

Whether Doku can stay on the pitch is down to whether the treatment was completed by the time the cautioning process was completed. Based on what you’re saying, it wasn’t. So it was correct that Doku went off.
