General Discussion / Re: M OLIVER - Fulham v Brighton.
« on: Sun 25 Jan 2026 12:00 »
Unfortunately it seems my comments from Monday are still being received in a different way to what I intended despite the fact I explained my reasoning.

I agree that no team or fixture should be exempt from having Oliver referee appointed. However, context and timing is key. Oliver is going to have a whopper match on Wednesday in the Champions League I would expect (just a guess). If he does, I think giving him this game is unnecessary and a rest would've done him better as many on here often give out about him needing more resting time. If for some reason he's not appointed on Wednesday, then fair enough, this appointment cannot be critiqued. I just feel that a rest is better than having to trek down to London to ref one of the more manageable games of the weekend.

General Discussion / Re: Worst performance ever

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lahoz in the Argentina v Nertherlands game, probably not the worst performance of all time but certainly up there for one of the most high profile disasters.

Adam…2022 World Cup Final was Argentina v France and I can safely say that no English officials were on that fixture despite what your archives say.

Quarter finals, forgot to write quarter.

4
Gary Beswick has replaced James Mainwaring on Fulham v Brighton
Been a long time since he had the yellow flag

I went back into the archives, the last time he was AR2 at all was in the 2022 World Cup Final between Croatia and Brazil when he filled in for Simon Bennett. I haven't found one since then in the Prem or European Football.

29th December 2023: he was a replacement and was AR2 to Graham Scott in the championship, West Brom v Leeds.

I never even thought to check the Championship! Who would've thought he'd be playing AR2 to Grandad! I must go back and see when his last actual appointment as AR2 was without replacement!

I have one in mind, a famous game for me in January 2020 where he was AR2, Liverpool v Man Utd at Anfield, the only reason I remember is because whenever the goal pops up on my feed from time to time he is on it as he calls the offside before Salah scores. There could've been one sooner but im not sure.

Good call for an OFR by JG to rescind a dive and award an AFCB PK. Clearly and obviously was not a dive and contact was made meaning it was an error by PT, seeing his angle at which he was at in real time im not surprised he thought it was a dive so perfect use of VAR.

Considering that was his 1st ever announcement I thought it was very clear and concise.

Lots of fun and games in this weeks set compared to the last few Vanilla ones.

Why give Pawson the big game now when he's been great all season and now is going through a rough patch, and he was VAR for the Manchester Derby! Make of that what you will.

Salisbury for us for the 2nd time ever is a treat, ive always liked him, Hallam's debut could be fun with Wolves unbeaten in 4 and City winless in 4! Royalty in yellow at the Cottage seems unnecessary for such a fixture!

Just to clarify, are you suggesting that our game v Brighton shouldn’t be handled by someone like Oliver?

I just think personally they could've spread the fun to that fixture too. I just think it shouldn't be the most challenging of games and therefore considering Oliver is more or less guaranteed to have a game next Wednesday in the Champions League final matchday a rest would be better than being in the middle on Saturday. Especially when theres referees like Robinson who have been out of the middle for what will be multiple weeks come the end of the week, the love needs to be spread, not concentrated on one source!

Cup Appointments / Re: The Emirates FA Cup - 2025/2026
« on: Sun 11 Jan 2026 16:13 »
Neil Davies is AR1 at Derby rather than Adam Nunn. Davies is localish so must have been a last minute replacement.

Is Davies not London based ?

I confused him in my head with Eddie Smart, thinking he came from Birmingham which isn't a million miles from Derby.

Davies is based somewhere up near Merseyside as far as im aware because he's not allowed be apart of Liverpool or Everton games. Unless he just supports one of them?

Unless he has moved he is based in North London.  I remember he picked up a last minute replacement game at the Emirates a couple of seasons ago after something happened (can't remember what) to one of the appointed officials as he could get there quickly.

I remember that well it was quite the palava. Con Hatzadakis tested positive for the Covid on New Year's Day 2022 just before the Warmup. Davies couldn't get there until halftime so Kevin Friend had to run as AR2 for the 1st half, with some random person doing 4th official.

Then to top it all off, Michael Oliver who was supposed to be refereeing that evening also tested positive so Jarred Gillett who was VAR for the Arsenal game had to rush to hold the boards at Selhurst Park in place of Darren England who replaced Oliver as the ref for his game, with England refereeing for the 3rd time in 6 days, all of which were last minute replacements!

General Discussion / Re: Efl cup semi second legs and final
« on: Thu 08 Jan 2026 14:59 »
Hi all,

Question who do we think will get the second legs of the semis and who will get the final?

For me

Newcastle vs city 2nd leg
Stuart Atwell
Constantine Hatzadakis
Tim Wood
Sam Barrott
Darren England
Scott Ledger

Arsenal vs Chelsea 2nd leg
Craig Pawson
Lee Betts
Mat Wilkes
Tony Harrington
Michael Salisbury
Sian Massey-Ellis

Final
Peter Bankes
Wade Smith
Blake Antrobus
Tom Bramall
Alex James
John Brooks
Dan Robathan

I think we are in the very fortunate situation of having multiple candidates who are deserving of the final. My shortlist, in no particular order, would be:
Peter Bankes (Wade Smith, Blake Antrobus)
Darren England (Wade Smith, Akil Howson)
Jarred Gillett (Wade Smith, Steve Meredith)
Robert Jones (Wade Smith, Akil Howson)
Tony Harrington (Wade Smith, Matthew Wilkes)
The latter 2 are more unlikely, but I think they may go with a Merseyside ref because of no Liverpool involvement. In terms of VAR, maybe one of the new VARS, or Jarred Gillett if not the on field referee.

Semi finals: Brooks will get one as he had last year's final, Pawson/Attwell for the other id say.

General Discussion / Re: Tony Harrington: West Ham v Forest
« on: Wed 07 Jan 2026 15:42 »
Santos has clearly brought something from Forest - the disrespect of officials and blaming them.  West Ham are where they are for a reason, different referees each game but one common denominator.
Harrington was OK and I think criticism of him applies to every referee in the Premiership. In their desire to allow a more physical game, some challenges which I would think a foul, they play on. Oliver, excellent as he is, is prone to this criticism.
Agree about the penalty, keepers need to understand as Rob Green explained on Sky, if you come off your line you cannot expect to be treated any differently from any other player. On you goal line, that is the goalkeeper's territory and more leeway should be given.
So a goalkeeper whacking an opponent around the head is be OK as long as they have at least one foot on the goal line?  Noted.

Nope that's not what either Rob Green or Failed Ref said. Being on the line gives leighway ever so slightly to the goalkeeper to be more physical, obviously the ball still has to be won when a challenge is made. A mistimed punch is obviously still a PK.

Ref Cam footage and audio from the match. I have to say his comms sounds very good.

I'm enjoying the refcams, Oliver's one from last week was also a good watch and I believe we are getting more after the FA Cup, a good addition for me.
