Even when we disagree strongly with a referee's decisions please can we give them the courtesy of using their full name rather than just Kirk?

Countless managers and clubs claim to have received similar apologies on a weekly basis. I wonder if they're either habded out very easily to shut managers and clubs up or whether managers hang on to any small crumb of comfort they get and claim it as an apology. I've been suspicious for some time.

General Discussion / Re: The VAR thread« on: Fri 27 Feb 2026 11:18 »
Perhaps I worded it badly. I have no problem with the violence being sanctioned but rather that VAR has the potential to introduce a time warp into proceedings because there was the potential to go back to restart with a penalty which occurred before the subsequent free kick and violent act. Unless there is a significant delay in an assistant notifying the ref of something they've missed it couldn't happen in a match without VAR.

General Discussion / Re: The VAR thread« on: Fri 27 Feb 2026 08:49 »
Having spent my regular Thursday evening struggling with the number of notes Mozart managed to put on a page, I looked for some football before bed, finding that the only match still playing was Genk v Dinamo Zagreb. Two incidents occurred very close together for VAR scrutiny. Firstly, a potential penalty for Genk which was waved away by referee Zwayer. As the ball was cleared upfield, a Dinamo player was fouled and reacted by hitting the Genk player. It was more of a slap than a punch and without any great force but was to the face. Herr Zwayer initially showed a yellow card and the match was paused whilst the incidents were checked. The decision for the penalty was shown to be correct and Herr Zwayer was sent to the screen to have another look at the slap, the yellow then becoming red. No problems with either decision. But I couldn't help thinking about what would have happened if the penalty decision had been overturned. Presumably the red card would still have been issued as Violent Conduct occurred even though the match should have been stopped a few seconds earlier which does seem rather against the laws of natural justice.

General Discussion / Dean Brennan / Kirsty Dowle« on: Thu 04 Dec 2025 08:37 »
Barnet manager Dean Brennan has been charged with acting in an improper manner towards and verbally abusing a match official during their match against Shrewsbury in September. It is to be treated as an aggravated breach of the rules due to references about Ms Dowle's gender.

General Discussion / Re: C KAVANAGH - Man City v Liverpool« on: Wed 12 Nov 2025 08:39 »
I saw the incident for the first time last night. Robertson makes no attempt to get back onside and has to duck out of the way of the ball. His only reason for being there is to cause problems for the keeper. In 99.9 % of matches, that's offside no questions asked. The only reason we're having this debate is Tv running and ruining the game at the top levels, something my father warned me about 50 years ago.

My annual trip to watch Stanley at MK
Milton Keynes Dons FC (First Team) v Accrington Stanley FC (First Team) Football League 2 Referee: Jackson, Scott Assistant Referee: Webb, Michael Assistant Referee: O'Shea, Declan Fourth Official: Smith, Rob Not a difficult game to referee but I think Mr Jackson got all the major decisions right. Two first half yellow cards for MK's Kelly and Offord for SPA were nailed on as was one for Stanley's Heath for kicking the ball away. (It was in frustration at himself but he managed to hit the back wall of the top tier!). MK Don's fans thought Conneely should have received more than yellow for a late challenge. I was too far away to judge but it was right under the nose of AR1 so happy to go with the call of yellow. Stanley took the lead with a nice passing move that left Sinclair one on one with the keeper and he finished well. MK's equaliser in the 3rd minute of the second half had Stanley protesting about a foul on goalkeeper Wright. Again, I couldn't see clearly, but having seen the goal on brief highlights there was no case to answer. He simply dropped the ball in a crowded goalmouth. MK's Lemonheigh- Evans was yellow carded for a late challenge. Stanley retook the lead and that was that until the fifth minute of stoppage time when MK's Offord clearly allowed frustration to get the better of him and kicked into the calf of Stanley's Henderson whilst he was shielding the ball near the corner flag, receiving a second yellow and subsequent red for his actions. MK's Gilbey was also shown yellow, presumably for something said. If I'm looking for criticism, I thought Mr Jackson was very lenient on holding and pulling by both teams but overall a good performance. 14

Having a free Saturday I decided to channel my inner JCFC and travel to a match by bus and train which led me to
Southern League Premier South Berkhamsted v Wimborne Town Ref: Thomas Berry Assistants: Asstivan Yordanov & Daniel Harvey Mr Berry showed from the beginning that he had a high tolerance for strong challenges and maintained that threshold throughout the match. The first flash point came on 12 minutes when Berkhamsted thought they should have had a penalty for a strong challenge on their number 11. Mr Berry was quick to turn it down and the Berkhamsted 5 protested too strongly earning himself a yellow card. In spite of attempted interventions by both teams Mr Berry was so caught up with issuing the card that he didn't notice the player was still on the floor and clearly in need of medical attention. On 21 minutes Wimborne 9 crashed a shot against the crossbar although AR1's correct flag meant it wouldn't have counted. A couple of minutes later he broke through again, this time clearly onside and finished into the bottom corner. On 31 minutes Berkhamsted 6 had to be substituted after another heavy challenge which I thought was afters by Wimborne 16 but the officials didn't see anything wrong in it. Wimborne doubled their lead on 41 minutes when their number 4 scored after Berkhamsted had failed to deal with a free kick and got a third seven minutes after half time when number 9 was left free in the box to have a second go after his first attempt had been saved. On 61 minutes there was a coming together in midfield which led to Berkhamsted 11 leaving the field with a shoulder injury. However he was also declared the culprit and received a yellow card as he left. The match then petered out although Wimborne 7 received a yellow card for a deliberate pull back and their number 8 got one for a high challenge. I am still trying to work out whether Mr Berry managed things really well or was fortunate that things didn't get out of hand by players looking for retribution. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. The players moaned but no more than that. He counts down well, began promptly at 3 o clock and only had a 13 minute interval at half time. I don't know whether he wanted to watch the England match but it helped with my travel arrangements and I was home by 6.15. 15
