Martinez is an outstanding keeper but he is one of the worst cheats in the league.  Check ou the reaction of Konsa here to his antics.

General Discussion / Re: Newcastle vs City- Kavanagh/Attwell

I was at the game.  The big screen said the goal was being checked for offside.  That took an age then the ref was sent to the camera.  I said they must be checking for a foul rather than offside because that doesn't need a ref check with SAOT?  In fact, as a mere fan in the ground, I had no idea what was going on!

Hands up anyone who hasn’t put on a few pounds over Christmas!!

Agreed. But in this case it was.

If the offence had been committed outside the area with Bentacur ignoring the ball and grabbing Burn would it have been a free kick?  Of course it would.

Just watching Jay Bothroyd this morning. I want Stephen Warnock back - he knew what he was talking about unlike Bothroyd.

With regard to the Pope/Gykores “penalty, could VAR have been influenced by the way the Arsenal player threw himself to the ground like a newly born giraffe on monkey dust??

There was a booking for simulation - Newcastle 11 - deserved. Couldn't mention any other bookings because my mind was numb after about 20 mins in and I was clock watching desperate for home time.

This was in your imagination.  The Newcastle 11 - Barnes - was not booked for simulation or anything else.  Your mind was clearly numbed through the whole game!

Bramhall has reffed 11 games in the prem this year and a similar number in the championship. One of those games was Villa’s visit to Southampton when Emery made no complaint about his lack of experience. In fact the ref gave Villa 2 penalties, both of which they missed!

In the 2019/20 season Villa escaped relegation by one point - thanks in part to the failure of the goal line technology denying Sheffield United a goal which meant Villa drew the game. I don’t recall the club expressing any desire to have Sheffield awarded a goal!

For one of the early posters to say the ref’s decision on Sunday WILL cost Villa millions is, with respect, daft. Bearing in mind that Villa had one shot on target in the game to Man United’s 10, there is absolutely no guarantee Villa would have held out for the rest of the game.

You win some and you lose some Villa. Accept the result with a bit of dignity rather than whingeing.

Any thoughts on the tackle on Brereton Diaz that injured him. Watson got the ball but I wondered if it was a booking as a bit reckless??

That’s not what I said. ARs would have to check where head/foot or however else a goal was scored were. Unless you think we have a different offside law now for those without VAR??

That was my point. He could have scored with it but didn’t. And the offside wasn’t given on the pitch. Leagues without VAR would manage exactly as they do now - they’d use an AR with a flag.

It wasn’t obvious because it took a while to decide by the  new technology and I’m not sure how his shoulder was gaining an advantage. Just a suggestion though.

General Discussion / Offside
« on: Mon 03 Mar 2025 15:56 »
Now we have the semi automated offside available is it not time to amend the offside law.  How about making it necessary for the part of the body which scores the goal to be offside?  On Sunday we saw a Newcastle goal disallowed because the attacker's upper body was marginally offside but his foot with which he scored the goal was well onside.  The still clearly showed this.  It seems mad that the law is being used to make every attempt to disallow goals rather than reward good play.  I know you'll all shout at me but I think it's worth considering.

Why did the VAR seemingly spend so long checking for handball?  Surely the offside should have been checked first then handball becomes irrelevant??
