I recall Kevin Friend having an absolute nightmare in a match at Old Trafford - I want to say it was Man United v Bournemouth.

Big tennis fan here - video reviews are still somewhat of a novelty in tennis, and there've been quite a few teething issues. It's a good idea, but they usually do end up taking at least a couple of minutes.

Cup Appointments / Re: The Emirates FA Cup - 2025/2026« on: Sun 11 Jan 2026 20:19 »

This link has a list of all his matches, and there is also a break down by clubs in a table - he has never done an Everton or Liverpool match in his career (he has done one Tranmere match funnily enough, an FA Cup match against Watford) - this would lead me to suggest he does support one of the Liverpool teams. 4
General Discussion / Re: Chris Kavanagh« on: Sat 03 Jan 2026 19:43 »
Kavanagh is top of the table with 16 appointments, while Salisbury has had 7, Brooks 6 and Robinson 5 - accepting injuries have played a part in some of those tallies being low.
For comparison, here are the highest/lowest number of games in some of the other European leagues France - highest is 10 (Brisard)/lowest is 3 (El Hadj who has been injured, next lowest is 6) Spain - highest is 10 (Ortiz/Gil/Cordero)/lowest is 6 (Sanchez/Martinez) Germany - highest is 8 (Zwayer/Jablonski/Siebert/Brand)/lowest (not including Schroder on 1) is 4 (Petersen/Gerach/Aytekin/Ittrich, some of who have been injured) So Chris has had twice the number of games as the top referees in Germany. 5

I guess for games in London, it's more straightforward to either fly or get the train down, whereas it's not quite as easy for games like Bournemouth, where there isn't a direct connection by train/plane from most of the UK.

We (Everton) didn’t have Kirk before - his first PL game was Burnley v Crystal Palace.
In at least 2 cases, we have referees taking charge of a team they had incredibly recently, and in a few more instances, the appointment is incredibly predictable. 8

That is an extremely quick return to Bournemouth for Kav. It's also 2 days after he has Liverpool v Leeds - he could surely have been given a Sunday game.

I watched some of it, he was OK. He was quite card happy - 7 yellow cards plus 2 to the managers, and I don't think it needed to be - a couple of the cards I saw could have been managed. The card count was 5 to Tranmere, 2 to Fleetwood (6-3 including managers), which may have caused Tranmere fans to not be too thrilled with his performance.

I think I've read Bankes is an Everton fan. Given he did the first Everton friendly at Hill Dickinson Stadium, it wouldn't surprise me.

Good to see Gillett back, and he's one of four to get 2 matches in this set, along with Jones, Kavanagh and Harrington.
Darren England has probably the most eye catching fixture among these appointments with Arsenal v Villa, though I quite like the look of Gillett's second fixture (Sunderland v City), and Attwell on Chelsea v Villa. 12
General Discussion / Re: Newcastle v Chelsea - Andy Madley (VAR Peter Bankes)« on: Sun 21 Dec 2025 17:30 »
The worst part for me in the penalty incident was how quickly Peter Bankes completed the check on VAR - it took probably no more than 10 seconds.

If our referees took the approach Alejandro Quintero did with Real Madrid the other week, I don't reckon many teams would get to the end with 11 men, but they may get the message that way.
We did see some attempts at quelling protests with cards this weekend, but more definitely needs to be done. 14
General Discussion / Re: J BROOKS - Spurs v Liverpool« on: Sat 20 Dec 2025 19:30 »
Brooks gave Simons a yellow before it was upgraded after VAR. Another case of a referee missing an incident of SFP in real time.
Romero can have absolutely no complaints, a complete moment of madness. Anthony Taylor has had Thomas Franke in his ear for most of the match. 15

Taking a tough stance on dissent has definitely helped Madley, he's done well so far.
Edit: Almost as soon as I posted that, Newcastle had a very valid shout for a penalty waved away by Madley and Bankes didn't step in. |
