General Discussion / Re: A MADLEY - Man C v Man U
« on: Sun 03 Mar 2024 16:03 »
He has correctly turned down 2 (half hearted) penalty appeals for Man City - the first in particular was a good spot.  25 minutes for the first free kick is very unusual.  He will be hoping the rest of the game is played in a similar spirit.

Bit more recently than a few weeks ago - it was last Saturday, so just 2 weeks between visits to the Etihad for Madley.  Hope it goes well for him though.

Good to see Gillett appears to be more in favour than he was - 4 appointments to the middle in the last 5 rounds.

Cup Appointments / Re: Emirates FA Cup 2023/2024

Given the appointments this season, surprised to see all SG1 in the middle. Was expecting to see Barrott, Welch, Allison etc. on at least one of the games!

Also, note the return of Darren England as VAR!

With Oliver as his partner in the VAR booth - a solid partner for him.

Robinson with his first VAR on his own

He was actually one of 5 SG2 referees appointed to the VAR panel when it was first introduced, so he actually did VAR on his own during it's first season of use.

Excellent advantage for the second Forest goal - this is probably the best run of games I've seen from Kavanagh for quite a while.

General Discussion / Re: M OLIVER - Liverpool v Man U

No complaints about Dalot red card, you simply cannot react like that even if the initial call is wrong.  However, Nunez sarcastically clapping after getting a yellow card should have seen the same sanction applied, but didn't - lack of consistency from Michael today.

Chris Kavanagh with Liverpool v Arsenal is a massive appointment for him and his team - delighted he's made such a good comeback from injury.

General Discussion / Jarred Gillett - Aston Villa v Arsenal

Fantastic spot for the handball by Havertz.  Think he's generally been very, very good all night - don't think any of the booked players can have any complaints.

Only thing puzzling me is why he's not getting more fixtures - 3rd vs 1st/2nd and he's handled it very well.

Just clocked James Mainwaring is on both Liverpool matches this week which is a bit silly.

On a similar note, Burt and Cook are on both Everton v Newcastle and Everton v Chelsea.

Non Footy Appointments / Re: TOM FOLEY

On similar lines, Ben O'Keeffe put up a post on social media about abuse he received during the RWC and the stats are really alarming.  I admire any official that feels like they can have a public profile - and there are a number of rugby officials who do, but unfortunately, as with other sports like football, they just get bombarded with threats and abuse when their decisions go against a country.  Social media sites really do need to be stricter on abuse and trolling.

It'll actually be his 7th - he's refereeing Wolves v Burnley tonight.  I feel like with the rise of Brooks, Gillett has been sidelined a little bit - Villa v Arsenal is an excellent appointment however.

It's great to see Chris finally be recognised with the big matches his performances have deserved, and even better to see him perform well in the big matches - I was impressed yesterday.  Hopefully, he will stay injury-free, because I still think he's got the potential to be up there with Taylor and Oliver.

Harrington is being hampered by injuries rather than a cautious easing in - he's actually picked up a few decent games in the relatively short time he's been on SG1.

Cup Appointments / Re: EFL Cup [Carabao Cup] - 2023/2024

Lewis Smith appears to be following Sam Barrott's path towards the top flight - 2 SG1 assistants and a PL team in his fixture.

I wonder if Pearce is injured - would be the only reason I can think of for him not to get anything after the group stages.
