General Discussion / Re: Pyramid Patrol 2025/26

Mr Hillier has been awarded the full 3 Lions badge, so was probably wearing that. He officiated a national final when he rose rapidly 15/20 odd years ago as an Assistant Referee. Would probably have been on the premier league, had he not taken a long sabbatical.

3 days after my 30th birthday, I was appointed with Chris O'Donnell (his first game as a 3) and Jake (his first game as a level 4), to which they both commented that I was obviously "on babysitting duty". I think I brought the average age of the team up by 3 years!

Don't worry Mr A Legg (East Grinstead), I remember you from those days!

Why was there no goal line technology for such a big game?

Stopped watching, as per my post, last time this was discussed

General Discussion / Re: Today’s Ref Watch

Final straw for me watching this edition. What could and should be a good segment has just become have another pop at the, this time ex, ref.

The "but he only just touched the ball" comment by Boothroyd on the Nick Pope incident summed it up for me. Ex players have no intention of learning the laws, and quite frankly I don't care what their opinion is, as I tuned in to hear the rationale for decisions.

Did he call out the 2 players who got cautioned for simulation last weekend? I'd turned off after the comment above. The 2 in the studio of the Friday night game certainly didn't and had a pop at the referee for basically dealing with it

General Discussion / Re: Replacing An Injured Official
« on: Tue 05 Aug 2025 21:19 »
Do we really need to replace a 4th official immediately though?

Agreed, it would be more work for AR1, but steps 3 to 7 manage without them.

There’s enough TV cameras at games to spot anyone being a eejit in the dugout for the odd few occasions this happens a season.

As this injury happened in the first half, a replacement official could have been sought for the 2nd half, giving the referee half time to explain to the new official what needs to be done.

Let’s be honest, the primary role of a 4th official is to take over from an incapacitated official. The rest of it is peripheral

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my 4th official appointments when I was on the system and my big break came from coming out of the crowd to line 77 minutes of what would now be a step 2 game, just 10 days after getting my class 1 (I’m showing my age now!), so who am I to moan about Mr Cork getting his 5, or should I say 64, minutes of glory.

Soccer Aid 2025

Referee: Rebecca Welch
Assistant Referee: Natalie Aspinall
Assistant Referee: Emily Carney
Fourth Official: Jane Simms

So the same officials as last year, despite 2 of them having retired during the season

mind you, good whistle blowing technique from jamie vardy

And then having blown the whistle, just walked off! This just shows the disrespect for referee's in general. Not just by him I would add. Only one (Southampton player) went to see if the referee was ok.

General courtesy in life would think a person who bumped into another accidently and knocked them over would go and assist and apologise. Mr Ayew should feel very embarrassed

It's just embarrassing by Selt

One could almost sympathise with a gut reaction, after the fluke went in, but to continue over 2 minutes later it needs looking into

The refereeing performance of 2024… in fairness to him he was exceptional

Really?

I wouldn't bank on it. Scotland had red, do not travel, warnings 2 weeks ago and the authorities didn't call off any fixtures

Must be difficult refereeing a game with 2 managers who are more interested in their players being involved in proverbial housery against each other rather than playing the game they are very well remunerated for.

As a side note, all these pundits stating that players, managers and supporters don't want red cards and they want 11 vs 11 so we don't have the borefest that the 2nd half was. If that is the case then why do players harangue referees to get their opponents cautioned and supporters baying for cards as well?

* removed edited word. I respect the mods decision, but I did check the dictionary definition carefully before I used it

Non Footy Appointments / Re: The Hundred Cricket 2024 (Men)
« on: Thu 08 Aug 2024 17:52 »
Have to say what an absolute awful competition this is. Drab dull cricket played in half empty stadia. The T20 blast should have been enhanced not bashed to one side so the ECB could make millions in profit!

Spot on. The initial “razzmatazz” has died off a lot, both in terms of players and the fanfare the comp came with. I only hope the ECB are seeing what we’re all seeing and make the most of the 18 counties that would thrive from the attention and finances.

I always thought this would be the year of truth for the Hundred. An Olympic games running at the same time, and effectively same time zone, was always, IMO, going to test the attendances.

2021 was the first year so had the novelty factor, as well Tokyo action taking place overnight and early morning here in the UK. It also had the attraction of families going out together in the summer again after the pandemic the year before.

Fast forward 3 years, money is tight for a lot of people and those who are likely to watch 100 are, I would suggest general sports fans, (rather than county fans) and those people will watch the Olympics for free at home.

I've dipped in and out of the 100 over the last 3 years, never watched a full game, so cannot comment on the standard. From an outside point of view it just seems like a few experienced players come to UK for 6 weeks, take the big money then move onto another tournament elsewhere.

Totally killed off the domestic 50 over competition and people wonder why we did so badly in the World Cup, but that's another discussion for another thread! However, I will say I don't begrudge any player leaving their county to go and play 100, when in most cases they will be getting a years salary for a months work!

In a week where referee loyalties have been questioned, bias implied on any decision the RFU have raised 2 fingers and trumped it all

Quins play Northampton at Twickenham this weekend: Referee Karl Dickson who played for Quins and whose brother played for Northampton

Yes the game could have gone to someone else but why? He's professional, international and in form.
To me, no issue.

In the words of Barry Davies "Interesting, very interesting"

Not aimed the post, but how it worked out!
