Oh dear,how times have changed in West Yorkshire!Last Huddersfield-Bradford bus at 2216!
When Stockport played at home on Friday nights in the late 1960's some of us would go to Huddersfield by bus,then train to Stalybridge,then train to Stockport.Match over at 2115,train to Stalybridge,enough time to visit pub on platform,then train to Huddersfield arrive 2305,then last bus to Bradford[every 15 minutes all day from 0530!] at 2315.Never a cancellation,either!Perhaps someone on Rate the ref could do a PHD on the decline of bus services and its affect on people's lives..................................
Today,Stockport-Stalybridge one train a WEEK.

Whistleblower,to us locals in West Yorkshire,Frank Cowen seemed to go on for ever!He was quite slight and didn't seem to change much in those 19 years at all.He was invariably very steady and reliable and what happened that evening at Rotherham was a mystery.
Some more esoteric knowledge-in his later years on the list,I think he moved to Saddleworth-then in Yorkshire.He thus became available for West Riding Cup matches,which, for lower division clubs was treated more seriously than today[if it still exists].

Only just seen this[should it be in ISOR?]interesting thread.
One match I did not see,but Hendo might remember,was at Rotherham in the 'sixties.Frank Cowen had a nightmare performance which made headlines in both local and national press.A friend based in Sheffield and a neutral couldn't believe how bad a much respected referee could be.But it happens.......!

To my intense embarrassment I also remember 'Have a Go'with the Pickles'.They don't make shows like that any more..................

I do remember RP Coleman,from Ripon-lined at P.A.once or twice.There was a large army camp[R.E.Camps]in the city-sadly,I cannot give you a name,though.

Can't remember PA having referees from Wiltshire before ie AR Glasson,et al but somebody out there might have a record of it-I certainly never saw anyone from so far south in my long gone watching days.
Towards the end of their League career PA did get referees from a distance but I was no longer watching.

Cardiff-Spurs 23/4/56 DT Markall[Bridgwater].Interesting-there was a linesman of the same name and initials as a regular in West Yorkshire-but he was from Rotherham.
Same person removed or?

I find this series fascinating-this was the first season that friends and I became interested in who was refereeing.Alot of these names bring back memories although we only saw soccer in West Yorkshire.Anybody else notice the Appointments for Christmas Day and Boxing Day?I don't think this happened for much longer.What a contrast to today.I wonder if anyone had a 'stinker'on the 25th and had to face it all again next day.
I wish someone could give the referees for the lower divisions-a big job.
By accident I found out that in 1957 Bradford Park Avenue-Rochdale had RJ Leafe i/c,with JE Carr on the line.I must have seen it but have no recollection of this International Referee at Park Avenue.There were others in later years,I might add.
