Thinking back to those happy days when there used to be a referee pen picture in the programmes, I seem to recall that the most common occupation was sales representative, perhaps due to the flexibility of working hours.

Messrs Poll and Barber were sales reps for some of their careers.  Messrs Styles and Knight ran their own businesses - that also helped with time off!

Surely unique were Rex Spittle who was a Butlin's Redcoat and Walter Johnson who was a Clark's shoe clicker.

I know this was meant to be about home-grown referees, but at the risk of sending it spinning off in a different direction,  I seem to recall that the Italian referee Daniele Tombolini was a wine-taster.

I don’t suppose we’ve ever had one of those!  A tea-taster maybe?

Daniele Tombolini was (and presumably still is) a wine maker, though I'm sure he made a point of tasting the wines he made.  And on the subject of Italian referees Pierluigi Collina was a financial adviser.

Going back a while there was a pavior-he has been mentioned on here before in a prior discussion on occupations.
Another had the same occupation as the Gypsy Baron.........

Mr G D Green of Boldon was also a teacher.

 A Headmaster at a primary school in Seaham Co Durham.................MY HEADMASTER.
