Following Abdulrahman Al-Jassim in 2022, I wonder if they will continue a trend of giving the 3rd/4th play off to a host nation ref, thus Penso may get that appointment

For an outside outside pick for the final, how about Adham Mohammad Tumah Makhadmeh from Jordan? He was widely praised in England v DR Congo and just navigated a high pressure USA v Belgium match very well by all accounts.

Unlikely but he seems to be a FIFA favourite - maybe because he has same haircut as Collina!

In the light of Mr Trump's "suspect referee" statement, any decent and self-respecting organisation would immediately pencil. Raphael Claus In for a rôle in the Final. I am not sure (litotes!) that FIFA can be so regarded nowadays.

Hopefully Infantino and Trump aren’t going to try and influence Collina into putting an American onto the final, unless Collina feels one truly deserves it…

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it did happen though..

Nothing would surprise me about in this World Cup. Following UEFA’s response to the suspension row, I wonder if there will be any impact to the UEFA referee’s appointments ?

I was going to say this too. A good outside bet - if the OFRs etc have done for Faghani, (?), the Jordanian has had a very good tournament. Haven’t seen the USA game but Collina was in the stand and AFC has never had the final and would be totally neutral? Would actually be nice to see a ref just getting on with his job, doing well and being rewarded (Faghani, 2018).

Some big countries are out (Holland, Germany, Brazil) so their refs will be hoping for something? I rate Makkelie and think he often gets given the big games due to his quality and then overlooked for the final? He’s clearly eligible this time. If concacaf, Barton or Martinez on performance principle, and if Elfath is there, we’ll know Trump has been on the blower again!

IMO, the best referee in the World at the moment is Monsieur Turpin. If France do not make the final then he should be getting it

I'd like Turpin or Taylor to get the final this year if the results end up in a certain way. I think that they both have performed consistently well throughout the tournament and have the authority needed to manage a final.

Outside of them two, I'm not sure who deserves it. Maybe Barton.

Fedayi was VAR for Istvan once in MD2, no idea how many in total. Shaun didn’t get to be main VAR at all, and one can only assume it was because of the controversy. No other reason seems valid considering the amount of VAR officials compared to games!

Just out of general interest, why are you so certain that, were an English Referee to receive that appointment, it would definitely be Mr Oliver?
Mr Collina will,  I feel certain, appoint the most appropriate officials to any and all remaining games.

An Italian partner of a former colleague of mine,  suggests from media articles in Iraly that he is not as 'swayed' by VAR interventions as we are in England, particularly if it's in any way a debatable call.
His priority is, allowing for the above caveat, how the game has been managed
