Overlooking mandatory yellow cards
« on: Sat 04 Jul 2026 01:31 »
Having had the pleasure of watching most of the tournament, it seems clear to me that there's been a directive about not carding for all but the most blatant yellow card offences, even for mandatory yellows.

I've lost count at the number of yellows not given for clear cases of denying a promising attack, and just now in Argentina-Cape Verde a player not just left the pitch to celebrate but he went into the crowd! And again, no YC

This even applies to UEFA referees who would normally give cards for a lot less. Has anyone else noticed this too?

Yes, it’s blatantly obvious and it’s infuriating. I was glad to see Turpin referee the Colombia-Ghana game properly which made a nice change from what we’ve been seeing

I would find it very difficult to change at short notice. YCs became instinctive, hand would be in pocket before I'd thought "oops my boss might not like this"
As a referee of experience you get given the games that need refereeing, which means YC average may remain high. Choosing the right YCs is a skill - having 5 or 6 in a game reflects on players too. If they are all justified

You are 100% correct; but perhaps a required skill of the modern day interational referee is the ability to "flex" one's refereeing style to suit whoever has appointed one to a particular match?

One initially found that most amusing, but on further reflection one fears it may sadly be all too true.

I think fifa have made it quite clear they do not want the laws of the game to be enforced, they have removed balogun's suspension now for his clesr red card offence

Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last 16 tie against Belgium after his one game ban was suspended by FIFA. The striker was shown a straight red for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. FIFA have said that the ban will be suspended for a year.

"In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for one year, if Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during this period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement."

The American President said “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice”.

I’m sure he was on the phone to his mate at FIFA as soon as that was given.

It’s all a disgrace.

I trust King Charles, probably better if it was Princess Anne, 'phones up Infantile and gets the Quansah red card suspended for a year

Tango man is a disgrace… and FIFA are playing a very dangerous game by allowing Trump to dictate policy to them.

hi,

this is getting ridiculous - can't imagine anyone would want to referee USABEL now talk about a 'poisoned chalice'

very sad state of affairs - makes you wonder if a negative result on-field this evening for USA will be the final result or might it be subject to 'amendment'?

regards,

gnr

Makkelie will probably be the unlucky one, they've always given him the really tough games. (Well UEFA have at least). Hope not as he may be in with a shout at the final if it goes to UEFA - might make up a bit for all the times he should have had the CL final but didn't.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

It’s the Jordanian referee who officiated Englands R32 game vs DR Congo. A very big game and I hope he performs well.

I am guessing that the reluctance to issue cautions is a consequence of the rule that a suspension is imposed after two yellow cards, a rule that is normal in international tournaments, but stricter than (most of) those that apply in domestic league competitions.  It would seem that 'football has decided' that it does not want teams to be denied players merely on the basis of two cautions.  But if it is felt that too many suspensions compromise the sporting integrity of the tournament (questionable) or if the media companies that have paid vast sums for the television or streaming rights are frightened that their profits will be affected by the absence of important players (perhaps more plausible), I would have thought the answer would be to make the suspension rule a little more lenient, but to continue applying the laws of the game.
