The Times reported that Taylor/Oliver were ineligible for the 2022 final because it involved Argentina - not 100% sure it's true although I can't think of any examples of it happening at an international tournament

Poland's Szymon Marciniak will take charge of Argentina vs France.

No peace treaty has ever been signed after the Falklands War, so in that sense it could be said that the two countries are technically (legally?) still at war.  Others on this blog will be better qualified than I to clarify this.

Is that actually a thing? England have been referred by Argentinians, such as Elizondo in 2006 notably.

What’s the position with anyone in the world reffing Germany?!

Unless one of the 6 officials involved is wrong, it’s a thing

Given its now 50+ years since Falklands and both AT and MO have refereed the senior Argentine players for years, I really think they should let that go.
Plus Argentina seem to like European referees

I don’t disagree, just informing people of what I know to be true

You say you know it to be true, but how do you know that?  Horacio Elizondo refereed England vs Portugal in the 2006 World Cup, and sent off Rooney, so how can there be a blanket ban?  If there was such a ban it would be nonsensical that it wasn't in place then but is now.

You meant England v Portugal of course, but your point still stands that an Argentinian was indeed refereeing England back then.

2022 was politically challenging for that particular conflict. 40th year anniversary of the conflict. China putting out support for Argentinian control of the islands. And FIFA will 'find' any excuse for something, unless... (I won't finish the sentence!).

On a much lighter note, I see Argyle_Mikey’s wonderful ‘Reijnders’ joke now has no fewer than ELEVEN ‘funny’ ratings.  Well done sir!  Is this a record?  Should the guys at Guinness be informed?

I’m not sure when/why it has been a factor of consideration. English officials are telling people that they can’t, I’m going to trust them they know what they’re talking about. You can be sceptical all you want. It’s from the horses mouth.

Ah, the old horse's mouth thing, but you can't say which horse, must be true then.  It can't be true because as I said an Argentinian referee has refereed England.

Thanks for your input rustyref, I’ll stick with what I know and you can go with what you think you know! I’m not going to air private conversations in a public forum, as I’m sure you wouldn’t expect me to! A referee refereeing a game 20 years ago being your only example should probably tell you that something might’ve changed since then.

That's my point though, the Falklands war was much more recent 20 years ago than it is now, there haven't been any serious escalations since then so it is absolutely nonsensical that they have introduced a ban involving English and Argentinian referees since then.  That would be like FIFA deciding that German referees can't referee England, and vice versa, it makes zero sense.

Write to FIFA about it then, it’s not my decision is it😂

Agree with this. I know in Qatar it wasn't allowed because Anthony Taylor was affected by it in terms of it preventing him from getting some games he would have otherwise got. Whether that was just a temporary FIFA thing at the time purely for the duration of that WC I have no idea but if they can change from it being accepted previously, as it clearly was in 2006, to it no longer being accepted I'm sure they can re-change it back to being accepted again if they so choose.
