Robert Wurtz - 2 games come to mind, Liverpool winning the European Cup in 1977 and (my favourite), Argentina sticking six past Peru when they had to win by four clear goals to reach the 1978 World Cup Final  in Argentina, and then claiming that there was no collusion, bribery or political pressure behind the win!

Ken Aston - the Battle of Santiago in 1962, Chile v Italy in the World Cup, surely one of the dirtiest matches ever.

Miroslav Stupar - the whistle-in-the-crowd incident but I can't think which WC match it was without looking it up.

JCFC and JT (and anyone else out there) - feel free to post your answers to my quiz now.

Quite right about Ken Aston, AT

Almost right about Miroslav Stupar (France - Kuwait) when the latter stopped playing on hearing a whistle from the crowd. Kuwait protested and would not restart, with several bigwigs in Arab dress coming down onto the pitch. Eventually the game restarted and of course France won. The situation was reminiscent of Ali Kandil 12 years earlier, though with a different starting point.

Two interesting suggestions for Robert Wurtz - neither of which was the one I had in mind - obviously not a one-hit wonder. I was thinking of something closer to home.

With AT's permission (above), I shall therefore feed in

9. Denis Turner - Hereford beating Newcastle in the FA Cup in 1972, on a pitch which would cause modern players (and referees) to have a fit of the vapours and lead to postponement - but which provided great entertainment.

Was it about a problem with Robert's final game as a FIFA referee in Wales? Of course, it has suddenly come back to me. Wales v Scotland, and who handled the ball in the penalty area? Wurtz gave a penalty to Scotland which sent them to the World Cup, later replays suggested that it was a Scottish hand which made contact with the ball. The Welsh never forgave him for that.

That's the one I had in mind, AT, though it wasn't his final game as a FIFA referee. It was in October 1977, ai Anfield if memory serves me right, and Joe Jordan's was the hand that made contact with the ball. It was reported at the time that despite the error, Wales gave M. Wurtz top marks, as his overall work had been excellent. Such magnanimity would be rare today.

With AT's go ahead, the first five

1. Nippard - Arsenal v Ipswich F.A. Cup Final 1978 lap of honour
2. Buksh - Sutton v Coventry 1989 F.A. Cup upset
3. Richards - Derby v Sunderland 1995 victim cautioned
4. Kreitlein - England v Argentina World Cup Q-F 1966 captain dismissed
5. Morton - Crystal Palace v Brighton 1989 five penalties in half an hour

JT - ok with 1,2, 4 and 5 but not 3. I believe Phil Richards holds a unique place in English top flight refereeing but how and when?

IN $ it should be added that that nice Seņor Rattin was so taken with Herr Kreitlein's endearing manner (or possibly his after-shave) that he couldn't bear to leave the pitch.

I was there! A classic picture was taken just in front of me of a shaken Herr Kreitlein being led from the pitch at the end of the game by the aforementioned Ken Aston in a grey suit. An early FIFA observer or referee's minder perhaps? It has to be said that Herr Kreitlein's manner did not endear him to many including myself in the crowd. 'Punctilious' was how I heard it best described afterwards.

I shall pick the next couple of low-hanging fruit:

6. 1998 Sheffield Wednesday v Arsenal. Paul Alcock was pushed by Paolo di Canio and his attempts to regain his balance ended in an ignominious landing on the grass.
8. Eric Jennings: 1970 Cup Final Chelsea v Leeds United. Having been weak in the first match, he abdicated all responsibility in the replay, and lost all semblance of control.

Captioned "Little Noddy and Big Ears" perhaps?

Doggie Smith for booking Gazza after he dropped the YC, Gazza picked it up and before giving it to Mr Smith showed him the YC. Smith quickly then booked Gazza for Dissent by Action
Bobby Tait asking for his final match to be at Ibrox, he is a Rangers fan

I love the reference to Doggie Smith, but surely Gazza was the Retriever, golden or otherwise.
Ridiculous refereeing in my view.

Bobby Tait's final match was indeed Rangers v Kilmarnock in 1998. It ended rather badly for his team, though, as they struggled to break down the KIllie defence. Mr Tait added a generous allowance of added time in each half and seconds before the final whistle, KIlmarnock broke away and scored the winner.

Continuing my collection of AT's low-haning fruit:

13.1985 - Peter Willis sent off Kevin Moran of Manchester United - the first dismissal in an FA Cup Final.

14. 1932 - W P Harper allowed a controversial equaliser for Newcastle against Arsenal in the FA Cup Final, when evidence suggested that the ball was out of play before it was crossed. At least the third Stourbridge referee of the Cup Final managed without problems!

15. 1971 - Ray Tinkler allowed a goal for WBA, deeming that an offside player was not interfering with play. The linesman (Troup?)unhelpfully stood his ground as Leeds players protested en masse.
