One-hit wonders?
« on: Thu 30 Dec 2021 16:26 »
None of the refs shown below would have seen themselves as 'one-hit wonders,' but all are known for one match in particular, for good or bad reasons, happy or sad, even tragic. But what were the matches and what were the years? All bar one (*) are post-War and all bar one (+) of the English refs appear in Upton's. 30 in all including two from across the Channel. Please post piecemeal to give others a chance to respond and we'll let BMB answer Q1 first! Good luck. AT.

My (fallible) memory is telling me that Mr Richards in 3 was in fact called Phil.

While on the subject of Mr Richards, I suspect the match you have in mind is the League Cup Final of 2000, when he replaced Alan Wilkie, who had to come off because of an injury.

20. Coventry v Everton 1970. Willie Carr's donkey kick for Ernie Hunt to score. Sadly, a procedure later deemed illegal.

Many thanks, JCFC and JT for filling in and putting me right on some of the names. I will amend tomorrow.

JT - your PM, fine apart from 7, 10, 16, 21 (not the current David Webb) and a year needed for 24, Michael Lowe.

JCFC - I 'like' your answers so far!

Amendments now incorporated, thank you.

JT - as you rightly say (in a PM), there could be many answers for 7. Mike Dean, and I'm happy to accept suggestions from anyone. However, I remember one match in particular, and that is all I'm going to say!

Good luck with 21. David Webb of Sale and 24. Michael Lowe of Sheffield. For Michael, think big (pardon the pun), think Yorkshire and a result which, if repeated today, really would bring the house down! Boris10, are you able to help? And I still wince when the name David Webb of Sale is mentioned on RTR!

Perhaps you would be obliged to wince less often if you recalled him as Derek Webb.

Which takes us to 1980 and Clive Allen's shot rebounding off the stanchion, but a certain South London club being denied a goal.

Thanks JCFC and JT for putting me right on Derek rather than David Webb, I will amend. And yes, JCFC, you are of course correct in suggesting that the Palace were denied a great goal from a Clive Allen free kick because Derek Webb and his linesman thought the shot had come back off the post, whereas it had actually come back off the stanchion at the back of the goal. Derek seemed almost taken unawares when the kick was taken and, as a consequence, he was out of position to see what happened with the free kick. He laboured on for another season to complete just three years on the list, and one wonders how much the incident at Coventry affected his confidence and future performances.

JT, 1980 is correct for 24. Michael Lowe.

I believe it was one of the matches that led to a reserve referee being appointed as 4th official on Prem matches

7. I know it will not be the match you have in mind, but for me Mike Dean is most closely linked with the match he did not do: the splendid Cup Final of 2006, which eventually and deservedly went to Alan Wiley.

Agreed, it was not the match I had in mind. But yes, that was certainly some Final, compared with the 2008 Final which Mike was deservedly awarded. Now that the one-Final-and-out policy seems to have been abandoned, it will be interesting to see whether Mike gets another Final before he hangs up his boots.

With no further answers yet today, I shall dripfeed another:

28. Norman Glover was the referee for Bradford City v Lincoln City in 1985, the occasion of the dreadful fire. It's astonishimg that it was so long ago - umtil I recall that the 14 year olds I was with that day are now over 50. Where does time go? How is it that hours can pass so slowly, but years so quickly?
