And yes, JCFC, you are of course correct in suggesting that the Palace were denied a great goal from a Clive Allen free kick because Derek Webb and his linesman thought the shot had come back off the post, whereas it had actually come back off the stanchion at the back of the goal. Derek seemed almost taken unawares when the kick was taken and, as a consequence, he was out of position to see what happened with the free kick. He laboured on for another season to complete just three years on the list, and one wonders how much the incident at Coventry affected his confidence and future performances.
