An initial canter, without too much exercise of the grey matter so late into the evening

7    St Ives
10   Rhyl
16   Rottingdean
21   Whitby
22    Lewes

I shall have to disallow Lewes, as it does not quite meet the coastal requirement, while Lewis, though undoubtedly largely sea-girt, is not a town or village.

Perhaps sidekick is not the mot juste; friend, associate or companion might have been better.

A further three correct, Ashington, but your offer of Brighton is somewhat rocky. In this case, though not always, the exclamation mark in the clue is relevant.

Yes to all three - that's why I ruled out Poole Pottery in favour of Hornsea earlier.

In which case there are four answers, as I was thinking of New Quay, Wales.

Perhaps time to start giving some extra clues?

For 8) two lines of thought came to mind:
Ned Kelly "acquired" a chestnut mare but there the trail ends.
Is it hadn't been for the descriptor "chestnut" I would have been tempted to say Dyce.

For 23) is their any mileage in following the Scottish term "ghillie"?

Are any of these remotely going in the right direction?
