20. Correct on Keith Butcher. Not quite Busch but Busch + er = Butcher. I'll get my coat.
34. Correct again, Michael Lowe. Swing low, sweet chariot., coming for to carry me home. And Lo, a star appeared in the East. Keeps low rather than going up.
44. Ling is part-correct but something needs to be added (a task) to get the referee I was thinking of.

There was, I recall, a referee called A Jobling, from Morecambe, I think. A fiendishly difficult clue this one!

Google has located the miniature railway in Abbeydale Park, which is located in Dore - hence the key. Could the answer be the referee from Worcester whose career ended abruptly when he let himself down badly?

No, same home town, but a good couple of decades later.

Again, right town for 24, but wrong referee! Not M S Vieth either.
We have arrived at the same conclusion for 41, however.

A Job -ling is correct. Refereed the League Cup Final 2nd leg between Leicester and Stoke in April 1964 at the end of an 8 year career as a FL referee.

JT - 24 was Eddie Hughes of Weston-super-Mare who played five minutes under the allocated 45 in the 2nd half of a Palace v Fulham game in 1978 and was forced to retrieve the players from the dressing room to play the extra five minutes. Those of us who had gone at what we thought was the final whistle were not amused but Fulham still hung on to win 1-0.
JT & JCFC - a point each for Steve Dore for 41. Strange but I was thinking of D Orr of Iver Bucks, a FL ref for 5 seasons in the mid-1990s.

Which leaves -

19.    Everybody loves a man with a name of some convenience
Everybody certainly loves Raymond but it was not Lowestoft or Ray Johnson.
Think USA and then a tenuous link between the surname and a convenience!

25.    Nuts in 18, and that’s the short of it
18 is certainly Kirkpatrick, try shortening that and see what you come up with.

27.    Tall stories from both sides of the Thames (2 referees leading to one answer)
my dad used to tell me stories that I now know were complete tosh, and they could be called............?

28.    Oh  *@#*, I thought I ordered red ones for the extension, not yellow
one of the easier ones I think. Read the whole clue through. you were on the right lines but not Rob / Keith Stiles

Nice try JT, particularly Tommy Dawes for the extension, but not who I had in mind. Four short clues:

19. 'The Stump' church (location)
25. Short / diminutive
27. Di Canio (one referee out of the two who make up the answer)
28. Fairly recent departure

Over to you and JCFC and any others who think they can crack these four.
