I was rather pleased at finding Mr Suter for 37. JS or S Swain might be similar.

1, 19 & 38 correct

In journalism, a stringer is a freelance journalist, photographer, or videographer who contributes reports, photos, or videos to a news organisation on an ongoing basis but is paid individually for each piece of published or broadcast work.

Leaving 35 where you perhaps don't know the first name of the Worksop ref which is helpful for solving it

I found long ago that Upton only mentions one referee from Worksop. Reversing Thompson gave me Nospmoht, which seemed an unlikely name for a keeper. I tried reversing the only Worksop man I could think of, turning (Lee) Westwood into Eastwood, but that got me nowhere.
Mr Thompson was L D, so if the L stood for Lawrence, that  might take us to Liverpool keeper Tommy Lawrence.
