Another quizzle for those at a loose end
« on: Fri 26 Nov 2021 16:05 »
A European jaunt - a mish-mash of puns and general knowledge.

 1. A guided holiday, perhaps by coach.
 2. A byre?
 3. The littlest Teletubby.
 4. Her grandmother.
 5. French tin.
 6. German tin?
 7. George Brown's home of gnomes.
 8. A schism
 9. Deferential courtesy when the waiter presents the tab.
10.Capital greens.
11.Big-mouthed Meg in Edinburgh.
12.Number 11's alternative name - in Norway.
13.Where the Officers dine.
14.....Sea or the Solent.
15.Military conflict adage.
16.You can bank on this place.
17.Home of Hildegard
18.A sibling's daughter.
19.Doubly convenient.
20.Produced unbearable lightness.
21.Dreamt of a snowy Yule.
22.Goldwater?
23.Known for its hemispheres.
24.Artistically burnt.
25.A celebration of tools.
26.Rating system of Taylor's of Loughborough.
27.An operatic drinking song.
28.Dutch serpent.
29.Shakespeare had no time off here.
30.Its station is the centre of the Universe, according to Dali.
31.1980s FLOTUS.
32.Please leave, Mr Stallone.
33.Sir Christopher.
34.Essential after a visit to the loo.
35.Feminist cry prior to burning.
36.Stream with waterside pubs.
37.Fail to interest a female deer.
38.Sounds as if it has a famous odour.
39.Westphalian eggs go well with it.
40.What we have just done around Europe.

Good luck - and forgive any errors. One could have two answers, allowing for typical English mispronunciation - choose the one outside the UK.

Thanks for a good start- credit to Accy Grammar! Three of the four correct. The other, number 3, is defensible, but I was thinking of a town, rather than a river.

Sorry for the earworm, bmb.

Sorry, too, that I could not find a suitable Hungarian candidate.

Good to see that someone is looking at it anyway.

Thanks for your answers, bmb.

Number 7 is definitely correct - I had thoughr the phrase was Harold Wilson's, but apparently he copied it from George Brown, presumably at a time when the latter was not "tired and emotional" (as a newt.)

Number 5 is undeniably correct - Etain is indeed the fFrench for the metal and there is a very small town of that name near ther border with Belgium and Luxemburg, but I had in mind somewhere much more familiar to English people.

Number 2 is one of the harder ones, I think, and the friends who were the original recipients needed a further hint.

Number 11 was clearly visible in Brighouse's Commercial Street and in most other towns of any significance in England.

May be able to add a few more when time permits extensive use of thinking cap, but for now:-

14  Lyon
29  Athens
37  Bordeaux

Some of the others look rather tricky!

26.  Belgrade
38.  Cologne

I had originally thought of Innsbruck for 36, but on reflection "bruck" is a bridge rather than a stream...!

But not in English when pronounced as BROOK, so you can have that one too!

I am looking for a different spelling of number 13 - a historic city, with a magnificent cathedral.

Otherwise excellent.
