17. The pronunciation is correct - one more silent letter needs to be added.

Nic Berry is indeed an answer, but you seem determined to put him in the wrong place!

In 28, the capital G was not (for once) a typo.

Surprisingly, the Wikipedia entry for Stewarton does not mention the product for which it was known, but Google throws up other pages that do. The second half is a musical reference.

For 16 the synonym you need is a truncated South American capital.
For 17 a sensible try, but the r is not the missing letter, which comes at the end,as would be expected in French for the D to be pronounced
18. Would it help to insert the word "wartime" before shelter? His chosen name (actually his middle one) was that of a much-loved snail.
28. The remaining Frenchman, took charge of la Finale of 1989, in which Stade Toulousain beat Toulon.

Both Frenchmen, coincidentally, were from the Comité du Limousin, if I remember aright.
