It is sad that A C F Turvey is no longer with us and has gone to the celestial stadium above otherwise I feel he would have been just the person to be the General Manager of the SG4 Group

...and with Rene as his assistant, what more could SG4 want?

Perhaps we could entice Mr Hackett back instead!

My turn to be completely lost. René as in Gorden Kaye? Is/was there a referee who looked like him and had that nickname? I'm sure it can't be a reference to Chateaubriand's noble savage, nor to Uriah Rennie. Help!

JCFC  the answer lies in a thread on the previous site where I opined that a referee of yesteryear who served for an unsurprising short tenure on the National List always put me in mind of Gorden Kaye's wonderful creation of Rene from 'Allo 'Allo. The referee in question was Mike Bidmead who " didn't trouble the Scorers much" and graced the List from 1979 to 1981. I've seen some pretty dreadful performances from League referees in my time but Bidmead's is up there among the most notable, giving place only, in this regard, to Topsy himself.

Thank you, Whistleblower. I don't remember that reference on the previous site - memory failing no doubt. Mr Bidmead is not someone who ever featured in any match I saw and had left no impression on me, so I don't feel too worried for my remaining marbles.
