Simon beck with his first pl game of the season.  Just wondering if there is any reason Dan cook isn't on that game with Kavanagh.  Is he from Manchester. Could it be Europe league game for that trio on Thursday

Seems to be really strange appointments that the 4O at both Manchester City & West Ham are relatively unknown and if either referee gets injured in the warm up they will get thrown in to referee a PL match.

Ideally they need to increase the pool of SG and SG2 referees, and train them all as VAR's so there is enough cover and also consider reviewing the agreement that an SG1 referee will cover the FL every week, it will only take one injury to a referee and an inexperienced referee to have a mare and questions will be raised towards PGMOL

I appreciate that certain referee / AR teams are now established in the PL, but is there any policy regarding a VAR being allocated to a specific team?  The reason I ask is that I noticed Tierney was VAR at Burnley when he advised Oliver to retract his penalty decision, and this next Saturday he's again VAR to Oliver at Arsenal.  On Sunday, the situation is reversed with Oliver VAR to Tierney at Palace.  It's not something I've been aware of previously.  Is it planned or just convenience and coincidental?

Tierney, along with Attwell and Pawson have been designated as VAR for Champions League, so practice with Oliver seems a good idea

I think there is some consistency in referee/VAR parings but obviously changes because there are so many variables and some referees oare in the middle nearly every week whilst some aren't.

It probably makes sense for Taylor and Oliver to be paired with Tierney/Attwell/Pawson/Kavanagh quite a bit as they are the FIFA referees so will likely be officiating plenty in the Champions League and so on together. And I guess there is also logic in that the best referees probably get appointed to some of the higher profile fixtures and the best VARs (if there are any) do so too.

In terms of less experienced referees being appointed as FOs in the PL, i don't really have a problem with it. There's a lot of complaints about younger officials not being developed so I think it's fair enough for them to get some exposure to PL games. Yes there's a small chance the referee might get injured and then a small chance the FO might have a bad game but the greater probability is that it doesn't happen. I think it's right that SG1 referees are still used in the Football League because I think it's good for them to have some variance and you don't want to promote the best referees in the country and then only be using 10 of them every week.

You could expand SG1 and SG2 but then presumably you'd pretty much be in the same situation as now in terms of where individuals were assigned - they'd just be at a different level. If Charles Breakspear was appointed to SG2, would he be a better choice as FO at Brighton?

More importantly Kavanagh gets AFC Bournemouth...

About time Friend resurfaced at AFCB!

Chairman tells me he issued him with a banning order last season. Told him to buy a season ticket ticket instead of blagging freebies all the time or some such guff...  ;D
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

I can't believe they've appointed him to a Bournemouth game with him living so close to both Manchester clubs. Sheer lunacy on the PGMOL's part.

EDIT: Just noticed we have Lee Mason. Great.  ::)
David Silva olé.

If Taylor Can Referee the Manchester clubs then I Don’t see why Kavanagh Can’t. I Don’t Believe He Has Allegiances To either.

Well I thought kavanagh was rubbish tbh , for most of the game he looked like a little boy lost who didn’t seem to have a clue what he was doing , no Kmi wrong but IMO lots of pushes and pulls given the wrong way and Callum Wilson’s caution near the end was absurd ! If this is an example of select group referees we are in deep trouble .

I noticed he didn't have his FIFA badge on either.

Probably fell off in the dreadful weather we've had on the south coast today.

Bit of an off day then, He's normally quite good.

Having watched Oliver's performance at the emirates, I Have to say he is miles ahead of a lot of SG1, I think SG1 would do a hell of a lot better if they just got rid of some of the dross referees.
