I do hope Oliver and Taylor will be given weekends off soon - both have matches in Europe, and Oliver had one last week, yet both have been used the following weekend.  All that travelling, combined with weekly PL appointments is surely going to lead to burnout/dips in form if they're not careful.  There really is no excuse when they have so many referees in the group.

Pawson flies back from Serbia on Friday, straight off to Liverpool for 4O duties and then 4O duties at Burnley the next day. Ok 4O isn't as taxing as being referee but standing around trying to keep focus and babysit the managers while tired and stiff from travelling can't be much fun either. They should all be given 1 of 2 weekends off completely if they have a mid week Europe game.  It's not just the travel and living out of a suitcase away from home for a week or more there's the disruption to their training schedules and giving their bodies time to recoup.

I know the "lifestyle" is very different, but this is what is asked of the players - play somewhere exotic (ish!) midweek then fly back and play a Premier League game at the weekend.  Players get loads more £££ but for both players and referees, this is their profession. Its tough on them, but is it totally unreasonable?

I do get that point, but players don’t play on Saturday then drive a couple of hundred miles to sit on the bench on Sunday - that’s the equivalent analogy for refereeing and being VAR/FO the same weekend

Oliver is off to Romania for his game this Thursday for a tie that ended 4-0 in the first leg. Was it really necessary to appoint an elite referee for his second Europa League game in successive weeks for what is probably a dead rubber?

Quite often the Eastern European/Balkan region games are powder kegs due to the political relationship between the countries but this is one of the exceptions. Romanians & Serbs are very good friends, Romania supported Serbia over Kosovo independence, there’s a Romanian saying that goes: “The only two good neighbours Romania has are the Serbs and the Black Sea”. They have never fought against each other which is very unusual in that region! There's always one war or another.  They have a very similar friendship to Hungary & Poland. Romanian or Serbian team v Hungarian team would need an elite, not sure this one does though.

Players tend to fly first class, get driven to the airport, whisked through the VIP entry while the kitman struggles with everyones bags. They stay at a top hotel.  They get flown to their PL game at the weekend - stay at a top hotel & get the next day off having been flown then driven home.  The ref meanwhile drives himself to the airport, goes on his budget flight & there are always connecting flights where they sit around an airport in a public area for however long, stays at a reasonable but budget hotel, on return drives himself off to wherever the weekend game is, spends the night in another reasonable but budget hotel, does the game, then drives himself to wherever the following days game is and another night in a reasonable but budget hotel, then if lucky gets to drive home after that game & reintroduce himself to his family after up to 10 days away. If unlucky it's back to another reasonable but budget hotel ready for the following weeks 3 day midweek trip for a Euro game!

Yes they do for referees anyway & it's always budget airlines like Whizzair/Ryanair etc. and they always seem to manage a 2 legged flight instead of a direct one! Hotel is normally a travel lodge or premier inn.

To be fair, the one we use in Hungary is actually very nice, it's right on the bank of the Duna and from some windows you can see the parliament building. I stayed there during the Euros as the lockdown restrictions meant I wasn't allowed to stay at our home there. Well I was allowed but would have had to quarantine for 2 weeks of a 3 week trip, take a heap of covid tests & would have been denied access to things like press conferences that I was allowed access to by staying at the hotel!

You would think that John Brooks would like to be appointed to take charge of any match.

Just to add to this - one group of team ref who were out in Europe this week had a whopping 1 hour of sleep at the hotel before leaving for the airport for their return flight. 1 hour. Then they come back straight into several hours and miles of driving and 2 games in 24 hours - roles irrelevant, that exhaustion is going to be just the same along with the detrimental effect on their mental and physical wellbeing.

I'd have thought this raises employee duty of care issues in addition to compromising their ability to perform at their best.
