Great game for Tierney!

Don't think Spurs were too happy with Michael Oliver as VAR on Sheff Utd V Spurs last season!

Decent game for Bankes too with the West London derby. The card shark at Liverpool and Tierney picks up a plum game.

Looks like the FL is back being covered by SG1 after the Xmas period, and Darren Cann has a long trek up to Middlesbrough.

Great game for Tierney well deserved - he has really come on this season and seems to have overtaken kavanagh. Nice to see Bankes with a challenging game (WL derby). PL obviously didn’t take the LC appointments into consideration as United have Atkinson again. Good game for Moss @ city and Attwell @ Leicester.
Hooper with Leeds again...

Oliver with Coote again on VAR ???

Yes, I think we can say that Tierney has definitely 'come of age' as being regarded as one of the SG1 elite.  If he performs well in this high profile match then he will put himself in a very good place. I think there is little doubt that he is now ahead of Attwell and Coote and will possibly give Pawson a run for his money.  I did think Kavanagh was going to eclipse Tierney but now I'm not as certain.

Bankes clearly impressing the powers that be and quite reasonably so.

To be fair, Tierney has been on the list for 2 more years than Kavanagh, and is more experienced as well, so I am not sure where this idea that he has overtaken Chris has come from.  Kavanagh is 5 years younger, so I would expect him to grow even more in time - plus he has had the Manchester derby this season, so he is in a pretty good position himself.

That said, this is undoubtedly his biggest match so far, and a clear sign he is trusted with the biggest matches now.  I would have him as a favourite for one of the finals this year.

Rob Jones is the only referee to not get a game across either of the midweek rounds, or the weekend round.

Unless I am mistaken, Chris is category 1 and Tierney is category 2 still. I would say on that basis, Kavanagh is ahead of Paul..

In UEFA yes, but Tierney has been on the Premier League for 2 more seasons than Kavanagh.  Kavanagh is clearly ahead of Tierney internationally, but the reverse in the league.

Playing devils advocate: By that logic, Lee Mason and Jon Moss are ahead of both in the league

Good point!  However, I still do not think international rank holds that much sway in the league - Atkinson and Dean still get big matches despite both no longer being international referees, and Dean never got into the top category.  Likewise, Alan Wiley who never made it onto FIFA got plenty of important matches.

Thinking about it again, I think they are simply trying to spread out the biggest games among a larger group of referees than they have previously.

I have a feeling that Riley wants to test Tierney for a possible promotion on June. It's not a secret that UEFA is interested in domestic performances apart from the International ones. I know that Tierney had no appointment in Europe this season but that doesn't mean anything.
I know that I know nothing

Great game for Tierney, great to see big games shared more evenly. think he may being lined up for a cup final this year.

Dont think the villa fans will be happy getting Moss at the Etihad next week, both he and Friend are not on
The villa park faithful’s xmas card list.

I think he will get the Carabao Cup final whereas Kavanagh or Atwell will get the FA Cup final

I would be very surprised if the FA Cup Final  ( if we are back to relative normality by then and they choose someone who has not had the honour before ) goes to anyone else but Craig Pawson. Mind you, that appointment has certainly thrown up many surprises in the past.
