All 4th officials are PL refs too, the only exception being James Linington at Chelsea.

As a referee Lee Mason never seemed to be trusted with regular appointments. Now he has retired to become the PGMOL’s 1st “specialist 4thO” he does not appear in the 1st round of games.
Am I reading too much into this?

Yes, I think the 3 SG1 refs not involved are likely unavailable for some reason.

It seems a bit strange not to have any SG1 refereeing in EFL considering the size of group but perhaps they want to give everyone experience of PL given some changes in VAR interpretation etc, especially with them being 3 down which is probably the number you'd normally expect in EFL.

Hopefully likes of England, Madley and Jones will get opportunities soon. I think there should be less of Friend and Moss, amongst others, this year.

I see there has been a 3-way switch between Friend, Scott and Madley.  I assume something is up with Friend for switch to VAR and Madley replace him.

Just seen the highlights. Possible penalty incident not shown but I agree the Brentford player seemed to be holding the GKs arm from the corner. I would have disallowed the goal and awarded a free kick.

I have to say very disappointing VAR usage in the first several matches this season. Clear penalty for Arsenal last night that Balogun was tripped before shooting but ignored by Oliver and Kavanagh, clear penalty for Leeds in the last minute that Roberts was tripped by Maguire but ignored by Tierney and Kavanagh. Now a clear shove happens in Turf Moor that leads to the goal from Burnley. Coote should’ve blown his whistle immediately but the shove is still ignored by Gillett and the goal stands. IMO all of these were clear and obvious errors but VAR did not step in.
