Again we have the problem of both Manchester teams being refereed by local referees (Altrincham IS in Manchester. It is grossly unfair on these gentlemen to put them into that situation, I am sure we have all had difficult matches because we have a local team against visitors and it’s not easy. I am not casting aspersions on the honesty of the referees but any doubtful decision in favour of the Manchester team will raise eyebrows amongst the cynics. There is a maxim about justice not only being done but being seen to be done, and there are plenty of other referees available. Surely someone at PGMO has the intelligence to see this....or maybe not on past performance.

Actually, not wishing to be pedantic, but Altrincham is in CHESHIRE and Altrincham Referees are registered with Cheshire FA

Reading various reports and comments by pundits, I would say the consensus is that City should have had a penalty for the foul on Sterling (Halsey also of that view) but that Sterling himself was lucky not to have been red carded early in the game.  Not saying that the consensus is always right but it highlights the fact the match was not free of controversial decisions.  Personally, I was more in sympathy with the 'no penalty' than with only a YC for the dangerous lunge.

Altrincham is interesting, and having been brought up 2 miles away it's a familiar place to me.  Yes, it's in the county of Cheshire.  Politically, it comes under Trafford Council in Greater Manchester, and for good measure has a Warrington post code.  I believe Anthony Taylor is a keen supporter of the local football team.

Is Chris Kavanagh still a Manchester referee registered with the Manchester FA?  I appreciate he doesn't support either Manchester Club.

Kavanagh with the big decisions correct.

Clear simulation and second yellow. We should not be condoning this behaviour. Even the commentators agreed.

Good performance overall.

And your views on the Villa penalty that was not given?
As a villa fan, i would say Kavanagh was inconsistent with his foul detection.
The Penalty given in my mind was more of a penalty than that awarded at Old Trafford earlier in the season by Oliver or then penalty given by Moss last season when the man utd player kicked the villa defender.
That said, if sterling didnt get a penalty last night, then it raises the question if this was a penalty.
I will say Luiz fouled Pogba today.
The handball by Greenwood would have been harsh but i think probably was a penalty.
Possibly Kavanagh told var he had seen the incident and thought the hand was in a normal positon due to greenwoods movement or the ball travelled too short a distance, hence var thought it wasnt an obvious error.
The incident late on between Watkins and Henderson def was not a penalty, however when a goalkeeper comes
Rushing out like that, i defy anyone not to go to ground to avoid getting injured.
If that is to be deemed a dive, we would be getting a lot more yellow cards for simulation than we do.
Personally think Kavanagh got that one wrong. I guess that the only way he could have changed his mind about
Issuing the second yellow was if var had sent Kavanagh to the screen thinking it was a penalty, but then two wrongs dont make a right.

Villa were beaten fairly and squarely today by a better team especially in the second half.
Bet Man utd wish they could still play cup semi finals at their second favourite ground.

Game of huge significance at Craven Cottage - Fulham v Burnley - tonight, with just one relegation place now left which Fulham will surely occupy unless they beat Burnley. I wish ref David Coote and his team, plus VAR Peter Bankes, all the best for a good and certainly controversy-free evening.

No surprise as you say, and it would be nice if we could have a game without too much controversy.

After last time, I’d settle on moving your full stop to after the word “game” and removing the last four words!
