I was really hoping that they would have thought a little out of the box and given Marriner the Manchester derby, he is on top form at the moment but Oliver I'm sure will do his usual good job.

With my City hat on, I'm pleased you're not in charge of appointments, DublinRef  :)

Man City 2 C Palace 3, 22nd Dec 2018, ref A Marriner

It is really getting farcical now that they haven't been appointed.

I agree absolutely DublinRef, though I think it is more serious than that. The longer the first outing is delayed, the greater the pressure on the referee, particularly when they know that chances are few and far between. This can have an unfortunate deleterious effect on the referee concerned. Rob Jones, for example, was, by general consensus, an excellent, confident performer at SG2 and below, but the way he has been (mis)handled leaves him looking much less assured and at times uncertain.

By contrast, Tobias Stieler, not the most striking of referees, was promoted to the Bundesliga mid-season - and immediately appointed to the Friday evening televised match. Would that our authorities could show similar faith in their own judgements! If you don't think they are ready, don't promote them. If you do, give them a decent run of matches to prove it.

Or they could make it clear that these guys are on a "developmental" or "incremental" contract and their appointments will be managed accordingly.  That might take the focus off a little.  The ECB does something similar with centrally contracted cricketers.

I suspect there might well be an arrangement along what you describe, given the significant increase in SG1 numbers. But so long as that has been clearly articulated to them privately, would much really be gained from announcing it publicly? How much focus is there on Tony Harrington's appointments beyond a forum such as this? Would it be beneficial if the PL came out now and said 'Umm, you remember those three guys we promoted in the summer? Just to let you know we're not planning to use them in the Premier League intil December and they'll just do a few games to help get them ready for next season'.

Having very few games to referee cant inspire confidence nor can it be good for their rhythm.
You cant expect referees to referee once a month and not be rusty.

When I mentioned Marriner, Atkinson or Dean previously for the Manchester derby, I completely overlooked that AM took charge of City v Palace only last week when he sent off Laporte for DOGSO.  I can well understand Boz's sentiment although it was generally agreed the RC was correct.

As for the 3 promoted referees still awaiting their first games, if there is a congested fixture list over the Christmas / New Year period, maybe that would be an opportunity to filter them in.

What is the point of promoting Harrington and Salisbury if all they’re doing is select group 2 duties and var/fourth official duties?

Or Brooks? Tells a story about the underuse of these 3 when referee12 quite legitimately has forgotten that Brooks was also promoted.

John Brooks has been trusted to sit in front on a TV screen for the first time this season at the weekend.  Strange considering that he has had some previous experience of this role in the early days of VAR.

Definitely no need for any apology - you may have solved the mystery; perhaps the person responsible for the appointments has also forgotten who has been promoted.

Whenever I was lucky enough to get promotion I could not wait to get out there, knowing I would make mistakes and learn. To have been held back on the sidelines would just have made me more nervous about doing that first game.
The joys of years gone by when we got fixtures monthly meant you always knew when your next game was (and some instances a perfect chance to get back on the bike having crashed)
