Good game for Jones - seems to have been a Covid outbreak at Newcastle so hope it's not postponed!

Atkinson sensible choice for NLD - I wonder if that's the first time he and Kavanagh have worked together since the Wolves-Man Utd FA Cup game when Atkinson was reportedly unhappy with Kavanagh's decision to overrule him?

Marriner gets first PL game with fans returning.

Why is it a sensible choice?? It’s not like both teams are level on points at the top and it’s a winner takes all game!
Arsenal are 14th struggling and there are no fans in the ground. What better time to blood some of our less profile referees like Kavanagh, Attwell etc.
Bored of the same refs getting these types of games year in year out!

Perhaps they just wanted an appropriate match to remind him where his cards were, following his last two games !

There will be fans...

Tottenham are top.

As I mentioned on last week's appointment thread, there's been plenty of variety this season. Tierney has had Chelsea V Liverpool and Chelsea V Spurs, Kavanagh has had Man City V Arsenal, Pawson has had Liverpool V Arsenal and Man City V Liverpool, etc. I don't think your argument is really applicable to this season.

It’s 2000 fans- hardly enough to make a difference. Yes spurs are top -  it arsenal are 14th...

Attwell was getting big games last season - nothing this season. Nothing for Madley or Coote and Kavanagh has had City v Arsenal - hardly significant nowadays!

If you're saying City V Arsenal isn't that important, then presumably Spurs V Arsenal isn't either so what's the problem with Atkinson doing it?!

There's been plenty of variety in the appointments as I say. Atkinson is sitll one of the best referees imo and has done Man Utd V CHelsea and now Spurs V Arsenal which hardly seems excessive 3 months into the season.

I don't think Arsenal being 14th prevents it from being a big game, especially considering how condensed the league table is. Otherwise, Man Utd V Man City next week is currently 9th v 11th so they might as well give it to Lee Mason!

Its still a derby at the end of the day, no matter the positions of the teams. its still a big game for anyone to referee. There is no real problem with atkinson doing it imo

Strange that after all the shouting previously no1 has mentioned the lack of refereeing appointment for Michael Oliver

I did notice and the right decision in my view.  He can have a weekend in London if he wishes with two VAR roles Saturday & Sunday, the second to Paul Tierney who he's worked with quite a bit.

It would be most unfortunate for Rob Jones if the Villa v Newcastle game was called off due to the virus. He missed out on a previous appointment didn't he - due illness or injury I assume.

Like dave26, I've no problem with Marriner on the United game.  Rather more favourable memories of Andre in recent times than on what I think was his first visit to Old Trafford years ago.  (in case anyone wonders or remembers, he only booked a player for a deliberate stamp on Ryan Giggs.  It was at the Stretford end and I had a very good view).

As Readingfan mentions, it is noticeable that the top games or big derbies are being spread around more this season, although I appreciate bottom of the table games can be crucial and challenging, even at this stage of the season.  Anthony Taylor has, on paper, a fairly low key mid-table fixture at Burnley, important though it is to both clubs and fans.

She has been appointed to run the line on a WSL match on Sunday.
