Just caught Rob Jones' performance on Match of the Day. Surely not a penalty. It it is then the game of football is completely different now to how it has been played for most of its history.

Jones' running style and gait, I have noticed before, puts me very much in mind of a referee of yesteryear and until now I couldn't quite place who it was. It has dawned on me. Ray Toseland. Actually, if my memory is right ( it often isn't ) Jones looks rather like Toseland as well.

This has to be definitely Serious Foul Play or definitely DOGSO.  What it cannot be is a bit of both so that adds up to a red card.

Painful that it was, I am not convinced on Serious Foul Play.  Just because the defender made a (horrendous) mistake that does not mean he cannot try and recover the ball.  He did nick the ball but then caught Vardy with his follow through.  Is there a difference from the case of the West Ham player who cleared the ball, caught the opponent, got a VAR inspired red card and then successfully appealed?

DOGSO is equally doubtful for me - the keeper was slight favourite.

Its a yellow for me - but arguable up to a red (unlike the West Ham one!).

Saw this for the first time this morning and again I'm not sure slo-mo is helpful.  I rather agree with Leggy's analysis.  SFP would have been very harsh in my view but apparently the decision was for DOGSO which I'm also not convinced about either.  I'd need to watch it again but my impression at the time was that Vardy in trying to take advantage of the mistake was facing away from the direction the defender had played the ball. His movement to try and reach the loose ball meant he would have had to turn surely which must have given the GK a good chance of getting there first.  Some of you will have watched this numerous times but I wouldn't say it was an 'obvious' goal scoring opportunity from what I saw.

That said, was it likely VAR would recommend a review for a clear and obvious error?  Probably not, although I suspect he would have taken the same stance had Jones gone with a YC.

Well I think there is a sort of resemblance or perhaps, more accurately, Jones looks more like Toseland than he does a lot of yesteryear referees. However it is his running style which so puts me in mind of Toseland. Loose limbed might be a nice way of describing it; a certain floppiness might not be quite as nice.

That is the massive risk in using someone as 4th official who has refereed the game before.  Mike Dean has openly said that he can't referee both weekends and midweek any more as it takes him too long to recover, so I suspect he will be feeling it tomorrow after two games (or 1.5 games) inside 24 hours.  Luckily it didn't cause a problem, but at some point it will.

I think this is where the SG1 group being divided in 2 and having refs in pairs would help. If you had minimum 20 refs, you could have them in 10 pairs and have the pair rotate between 4o and ref weekly

Cant for the life of me understand why a referee who officiated fri or sat couldnt have been appointed as 4th official to this game.

We could end up losing two referees for next weekend because of these appointments.ie tierney and dean.

Unfortunately I'd agree. He'll be on the appointments tomorrow though most likely if he was due a game since its short notice. At least we should get to see other refs get a chance

Yep, even a grade 1 calf strain you are looking at 2 to 3 weeks, so very little chance of him refereeing again this season.

Its a pity his season has gone so bad since the last internationals, injury which got him removed from Leicester v Man City, a shocker in the cup final and then this

Think you are being very harsh on Tierney here, firstly injury does not get you removed from a fixture, more you
Have to hand it in as you are not physically fit to do the game. Secondly you are being extremely harsh saying
He had a shocker in the carabao cup final.
Agree there is little chance he will referee again this season due to his injury picked up today, but there is no reason he shouldnt get lots of var appointments in the meantime.
On another point you made about referees pairing up, that wont work as there are three referees now appointed
To each game, on field referee, 4th official and var.
