Tierney with the big London derby.

A fairly relaxing weekend for Taylor with a short stroll to the Etihad on Saturday as 4O and then the same duty on Monday but at West Ham.  Is there anything in Europe next week for him to fly out to?

Meanwhile, no respite for Oliver again with a middle at the Emirates.

Another game for Hooper and Bankes, but only a 40 and VAR for England; a 4O for Madley and a VAR duty for Jones.

Oliver 9 games out of 10....

Return of mason at the etihad and good to see games for Bankes and Hooper . Tierney picks up another top game- he’s really come on a lot in the last couple of seasons!
No surprise Coote features only once

I think this is Jones' first duty as VAR on a competitive game.

A shame not to see Jones/England refereeing and I think four of the weaker referees (Scott, Moss, Mason, Hooper) are all out on the same weekend.

I think it is not just 4 this season, tbh i reckon it is all of them and what i put it down to is VAR.

What is a free kick/Penalty Kick/Red Card/Yellow Card Offence anymore there is so much confusion surrounding the game even the referees officiating in the Premier League don't know.

I'm not sure I'd especially agree with that personally. For the weekend just gone, I thought that apart from the West Brom penalty situation, most of the PL refereeing I saw was perfectly fine (as was Darren Bond in the Bournemouth V Reading game.)

I think the point about confusion regarding what constitutes offences - and you could add handball to that - is a fair one.

On the question of performances over the weekend, I tend to agree with Readingfan.  Have just watched the highlights of the Villa v Brighton game again, and having seen a different close-up, I still think the contact with the Villa player (without contact with the ball first) would have been sufficient for a penalty despite his theatrics. But VAR and then Oliver evidently felt the initial contact with the ball was significant enough. I also saw a different angle of the Lamptey RC for a second yellow and it looked to me he caught Grealish with his foot from behind and not just a push or bump, so in my view the second YC was perfectly justified.

As for the West Brom penalty, I just wish David Coote had kept to his original decision but I do sympathise with the fellow in the circumstances.

Both those 'penalty' decisions have split opinion, so it does raise the issue of what is considered clear and obvious and whether, for penalties at least, the bar has been lowered, which was a point I think Readingfan made earlier.

In other games I saw, I thought Mike Dean was fine for Spurs v City, as was Pawson at Newcastle.  Missed the few minutes of the Leeds v Arsenal game when Pepe was sent off.  From brief highlights watched later, that incident was behind Taylor's back so he couldn't have seen it. But if that was the 'afters', I wasn't sure just when the 'starters' occurred, so wondered if the players had been warned and whether there had been an opportunity for 'preventative refereeing'.  That aside, and what a pity if the Leeds player wasn't shown a YC for his amateur dramatics, Taylor looked to have a good game.

Further to my last post, Mike Dean has Sheffield Utd for the THIRD time this season already. Kavanagh back on Leeds, despite doing their last away game on matchday 8, Hooper with Fulham again - his last game also involved them. Only Bankes with VIlla and West Ham, has a game where the referee hasnt had either team aready this season. Crazy!

Let’s hope Raul Jimenez is ok after his sickening clash of heads with David Luiz. Awful awful to see.

One thing that occurred to me is the highest profiel games have been quite evenly split so far this season:

Pawson - Liverpool V Arsenal and Man City V Liverpool
Taylor - Man Utd V Spurs
Oliver - Everton V Liverpool
Atkinson - Man Utd V Chelsea
Tierney - Chelsea V Liverpool and Chelsea V Spurs
Dean - Man Utd V Arsenal and Spurs V Man City
Kavanagh - Man City V Arsenal

Also, Taylor and Oliver have only had 1 high profile match each - good to see the spread of appointments for high profile matches is wider, even if the overall spread of appointments still needs work.
