For crying out loud, what does Andy Madley have to do to get a Premier League game?!

Six games in and a FIFA referee has only had one PL game. It's appalling management.

In between trips abroad for FIFA/UEFA matches.

They are going to make him ill, he will end up exhausted.

I'm no sports psychologist but I'm sure he's physically very fit. Isn't it mental fitness and alertness that will be tested with a greater risk of mistakes?
At least he has Craig Pawson as VAR at Burnley.

Hours sat in a car or on a plane will take their toll even on someone as fit as him, broken sleep pattern, broken training regime, in part to so many travelling hours and miles, too many hours away from home all add up. Exhaustion can be as much, if not more, of a mental health issue as it can a physical one. It concerns me they are doing this to him. I don't want him to end up completely shattered and his mental health suffering as a result.

Thanks bmb.  That makes sense. He probably should have had a break from the PL.

I have to admit I'm slightly nervous for him for the big CL game tomorrow, especially with Rosetti as Observer.  England needs 2 worthy contenders for the Euros and then the WC, so I hope errors don't creep in which might be understandable based on his recent workload, but which might scupper his chances in the eyes of someone who, we are led to believe, is more impressed with Anthony Taylor anyway.

Hope he and his team perform really well in Germany.

Some attention has to be paid to workload of course but if Oliver wasn't refereeing then he'd be a Fourth Official or at Stockley Park so travel etc. would still happen.

The top players are used to a couple of matches a week and travel and I'm sure the top referees are too.

I generally consider Oliver/Dean to be the best two PL referees so I'd expect them to both have a game pretty much every week with the occasional break. I'd probably be looking for both to end up with a figure of around 30 in terms of PL games refereed.

We get a lot wrong in Hungary but after the Federation allowed clubs to postpone league games to prepare for Europeans games & would change the league dates to give our National Team manager an extra week with the NT before an International match, they also started to give our referees the option of a weekend off before they had a big CL/EL match as well. Theory being they could relax, prepare themselves mentally etc. Any teams or referees officiating abroad are seen as representing the country on the world stage and the federation are proactive in helping them to prepare how they feel is best for them. I think it's probably that as a small country it's considered an honour to represent the country abroad. Not saying the UK refs don't feel an honour getting a big game, I'm sure they do, but it's a completely different mentality, the refs here are used to being a big presence in European games, the UK is used to having teams in the CL/EL, the National team (England at least) always qualifying for the big tournaments so it becomes common place & an expectation. In Hungary it is still a huge deal. Our PM and head of Federation would travel to big games Kassai did so he knew he had the Nations support, people would tune in to watch the game on TV - can you imagine fans here in England tuning in to watch a game purely because it was one of our refs and with the intention of supporting them not to ridicule them? I think sometimes the big nations could learn a lot from the smaller nations.

Weird how considering Coote didn't make any mistakes [according to the PGMOL] at the weekend that he's not VAR somewhere this weekend.

Why does he have to have a game every week- just because he’s one of our so called top referees. All the other 16 refs are in the pl because they are good referees, so they should be able to handle most of the games

I said 'pretty much every week'.

It's like Liverpool nearly always start Mo Salah or Sadio Mane because they're better than the alternatives so they're more likely to give you a higher level of performance.

I'd much rather have Michael Oliver in charge of a game if I was involved than Lee Mason or Jon Moss for instance, which I think is where the real problem is in terms of blocking the progression of the likes of Madley.

If Oliver had only done say five PL games so far then I wouldn't be too bothered but equally I think there's much bigger problems than probably the best referee so far having had a game every week.
