No Dean, Atkinson or Taylor in the middle? Wonder when the last time was that happened!

Why though?? He hasn’t had any “Lee Mason” moments. And IMO he hasn’t been the worst ref this season.
Seems to very much a hierarchical clicky nature about the PL ref groups and it stinks!

I was just thinking similarly ajb - whilst the death threats given to Mike Dean are abhorrent and simply can’t be accepted in society, let’s not forget the red card decision in Fulham-West Ham game was incredibly poor. Many other SG1 referees would not have seen a PL match for a long time after that!

At least Simon Hooper is getting a game, Palace v WBA being one of the more obvious of the weekend's fixtures for him to referee.

33 games in the latest round of appointments on the PL and Championship, yet Robert Jones gets just 2 x 4O, and he's supposed to be one of the up-and-coming referees on the list. A poor return in my view.

No Dean, Atkinson or Taylor in the middle? Wonder when the last time was that happened!

Taylor has a CL game tomorrow but no middle at weekend as you say.  Oliver on the other hand has a long trip to Kiev for the EL game Thursday and then back for the North London derby Sunday.  Not ideal I would have thought.  He showed signs of tiredness earlier in the season but has refereed well recently. Not checked Dean or Atkinson's recent appointments with Arsenal or Spurs and whether one of them could maybe have been at the Emirates instead of Oliver.

Like AT, I don't understand why Jones is so lacking in appointments

It make you wonder why they have promoted Rob Jones, as he his not getting much opportunity to referee, there are to many favourites with Mike Riley, as his appointments show every week, and it his about time the appointments were evenly made. (edited to fix qoute-hertsref)

Having watched a couple of Rob Jones' games this season in the PL I think (based on what I have seen) he is not performing overly well. Not such much in terms of KMI errors (although he has made a few) more so though in terms of his body language, player management and consistency in sanctions. However - it strikes me that this is most likely due to lack of experience at this level. The PGMOL (along with many on here) felt that he was an excellent referee worthy of promotion to SG1 therefore they must appoint him more frequently.

The dynamic they have created by appointing him so infrequently to the PL is one where he no doubt feels increased pressure to perform while also lacking in match fitness at that level. The combination in my mind is one likely to create a cycle of poorer performances and degrading confidence as time goes on.

I understand that a new referee has to be integrated carefully into the league with the right level of appointments both in terms of frequency and magnitude. I feel since what happened to Stuart Atwell the PGMOL have taken a stance of starting new referees off with the bare minimum of appointments and building them up very very slowly. I think while it is good that they have learned from the mistakes of Atwell being pushed too far too soon, they should also be aware that under appointing can hold pitfalls that can have an equally negative effect on a new official.

Whilst sometimes a bit frustrating, I think the PGMO's approach with newly promoted referees ahs generally worked quite well in recent years. Very slow and steady to begin with and then gradually giving them more opportunities. Although whether that's an effective way to produce the next Clattenburg or Webb who knows.

I thought Jones was under-used in the first half of the season (especially conspiring he was meant to do a Chelsea V Southampton game and not sure how many appointments of that sort of level he's had since) but I'd also agree with Dublinref that he's not been refereeing as well this season as in the past (Leeds V Burnley a key example) and I think there's increased exposure/scrutiny this season because of every game being televised and generally in a unique slot from other PL games.  I think a run of crucial Champonship matches might be a sensible way of allowing him to hopefully build some confidence and momentum again before giving him some PL matches (maybe invovling the bigger teams when they don't have so much to play for) towards the end of the season.

Is that because it basically has very little resting on it?
