Good job his injury happened in enough time to swap him - imagine if it’d been the warm up! That would’ve been a hell of a game for Tony Harrington!

Actually, Mr Oliver could have increased his lead by awarding a double penalty to Everton as both Dias and Ederson fouled Richarlison!?

Ha, ha. Just realised Taylor gave 2 penalties in the Leicester- Spurs game, one of them after an OFR. Memo to self: watch carefully and concentrate!

Do we actually have the penalty count for referees among the stats for 2020/21?

Many thanks for that.  Even allowing for some referees having less games, that quite a variation.

Are penalties awarded after an OFR included but those retracted after a review excluded?

Although Oliver has clocked up so many, I don't recall offhand any being overturned on review, or for that matter only being given after a visit to the monitor, but could well be wrong on that. Some were certainly of the 'soft' variety but not regarded as a 'clear and obvious' error.

I know Atkinson missed some games towards the end of the season due covid I think, but 2 penalties is remarkably few.  Wasn't it in the Neville / Carragher documentary on refereeing that Atkinson said you should be 110% sure for a penalty - or words to that effect?

With the season now over we know mason is going to be a full time var official after his last game so are we expecting some promotions from sg2 in time for the 2021/22 season?

How many promotions are required to replace one referee, bearing in mind that Lee Mason will (presumably) be covering twice as many games as VAR as he did this season?  Half a referee?  Given the number of games some of the newer SG1 members did this season there is an argument, on numbers alone I stress, not to promote any.

I would argue that some of our top referees are getting too many - top referees in Germany, France, Spain and Italy are getting no more than 20 games in a season (fewer in most countries) - Oliver and Taylor got 28 matches each this season.  They could easily spread the appointments out better so the less experienced referees get a few more games.

France (38 rounds):
The most matches anyone got was 20 (Brisard, Lesage and Buquet) - Turpin got 19

Spain (38 rounds):
The most matches anyone got was 21 (Gonzalez Fuertes and del Cerro Grande) - Lahoz got 18

Germany (34 rounds):
The most matches anyone got was 17 (Grafe and Brych).

Italy (38 rounds):
The most matches anyone got was 18 (Mariani) - Orsato got 15

Seems most other countries work on 1 in every 2, as opposed to almost 3 in every 4.
The lack of experience will show up sooner or later as age/injury/other appointments hit the numbers.
Surely we have enough games to be giving Jones, England et al 1 in every 2 matchweeks?

Oliver over turned his penalty decision in the villa v brighton game after Kavanagh asked him to view the screen.

Hungary 33 Rounds

Solymosi Péter - 22 - referee; 18 - AAR. * Has done more than 1 AAR duty in the same round on occasion hence why more than 33 in total.
Bogár Gergő - 22 - referee ; 11 - AAR
Berke Balázs - 17 - referee; 6 - AAR
Andó-Szabó Sándor - 16 - referee; 13 - AAR
Pintér Csaba - 15 - referee; 5 - AAR
Káprály Mihály - 15 - referee; 18 - AAR *NBII
Erdős József - 13 - referee; 22 - AAR * Has done more than 1 AAR duty in the same round on occasion hence why more than 33 in total.
Karakó Ferenc - 12 - referee; 9 - AAR
Farkas Ádám - 12 - referee; 15 - AAR * was injured/out for a few weeks
Bognár Tamás - 11 - referee; 2 - AAR *out for more than 1 month after getting covid
Iványi Zoltán - 11 - referee; 13 - AAR * was injured/out for a few weeks
Antal Péter - 11 - referee; 14 - AAR *NBII
Zierkelbach Péter - 8 - referee; 16 - AAR *NBII
Vad II István - 6 - referee; 9 - AAR * was injured for most of the season as per usual!! That's 3/4 seasons now where he has missed most of it...
Pillók Ádám - 5 - referee; 17 - AAR *NBII
Csonka Bence - 1 - referee 24 as AAR *NBII

We've had really bad problems with covid within the league & a lot of our referees have either been out having tested positive themselves or in quarantine after players from the game they were in tested positive so we have used NBII referees more than normal.  They'd normally do 3/4 games max per season. We've also had VAR training going on during the spring season so a lot of the refs have missed games because they were sat in the VAR van practicing although there were no comms linked with the on field referee team.
