Robert Jones is very similar to Stuart Attwell, far too young to be promoted to the Premier League at this time.

I don't actually know his age but that, I suggest, is irrelevant.  The question is "is he good enough?" and the answer, from what I have seen is almost certainly he is, or at least good enough to be given an opportunity.  The reason for Stuart Attwell's fall from grace was, at that time, not his age but he simply wasn't good enough.  I am pleased to say that he seems to be on the upward path again although I have my reservations as to whether he is worthy of his FIFA badge yet but these things seem to be determined by age rather than ability these days.

Simply put he was pushed too far too soon by Lord Elleray in his quest to get him fast tracked.
I agree that some referees have been pushed through the system far too quickly in the past. However, I don’t believe that we should be punishing our promising up and coming officials for the mistakes of their colleagues that came before them.

Jones almost got promoted last season (was at the assessment day) and has been given another season to improve his experience refereeing competitive championship fixtures as opposed to holding up boards for SG1. He is also older than you all seem to think. I’m almost sure he’s 30! If you’re good enough, you’re old enough!
rob jones is actually 31

Couldn’t agree more TheThingFromLewes... I always liked Alan Wiley as a SG1 referee and it seems he’s now ably helping promote some talent through our system for the future.

I think personality helps too. Having met Kavanagh and Jones a while back I can safely say both seem like they have their feet firmly on the ground, and this matters a lot in my opinion!

I Miss Wiley, i think he was one of our best at the time, shame he didn’t go further at uefa. I Don’t think Kavanagh could have a better tutor to be honest. Wiley Also Mentored Andre Marriner When He came through I’m Pretty Sure.

Mr Wiley was a very distinguished official in his time, much much better than some of the other officials who presided in the top tier. It’s a real shame that someone like Wiley isn’t involved more prominently in the development of the SG2 group.

It would certainly alleviate and remove the dross in there at present.

You mean to say that Alan Wiley has been partly responsible for selecting that surfeit of dross which comprises most of SG2. I'm afraid he's fallen a fair way in my estimation.

He may not have been involved in the selection but just chosen for the task of making bricks without straw.

Or conversely the dross he has been forced to work with are beyond even Wiley’s magical powers?

Alan Wiley was a referee who I much admired but his promotion opportunities suffered, particularly internationally, through coming on the scene late.  I can remember seeing him a few times in his West Midlands league days and thinking that he was one who would almost certainly make it on to the League list and when he did, he soon made his mark and became one of the safest pairs of hands on the SG.

I have no reason at all to doubt that he isn't doing just as well in his present role with SG2 but we do need to be careful and not assume that just because someone has been a very fine referee, they are going to be as good at managing and/or coaching others in that job.  I am sure many of us have seen people in all sorts of walks of life where someone good at his or her job has been promoted as a result into a managerial or supervisory role which has turned out to be disastrous and way above their level of competence.  The skills and requirements of such a role are often quite different and for which some people simply don't have the aptitude and/or for which they receive inadequate training.  A big problem is that, quite often, those that do the promoting are themselves in a job for which they are not sufficiently trained, well suited or equipped!

Watching the EFL highlights on Quest it appears that Anthony Backhouse has had another appearance in the Championship replacing Andy Madley at some point during today's match at Middlesbrough.
