Interesting to see change of policy in using SG2 referees for both legs. Guess it tells us who is well thought of at that level. Personally I think Championship play-offs should go to SG1 officials though. There's an awful lot riding on them.

Absolutely no surprises here once they had decided to use SG2 for both legs of the Play Offs.  Harrington has crept up a bit under the radar perhaps.

Gillett and Brooks confirmed as the top two in SG2 ( as indeed most of us already realised )

I think the fact that SG1 refs are not being used at all for these semi final playoffs has much to do with the number of PL games left to be played between now and 23rd May. I think we shall see a SG1 ref on the Final (as usual).

What struck me was the the 40 in the first 3 games are well established referees, even 'old-timers' now in some cases, but one of the newer guys, Mathew Donohue gets 4O in the 4th game.

Does Tim Robinson refereeing one of the semis indicate he hasn't fallen in favour perhaps as much as one or two have suggested, or does it simply confirm he is a leading SG2 official but not necessarily SG1 material?

Agree on the basis that I don't see the Championship final going to an SG2 referee outside of the above list.  I presume that this means one of the four above will be candidates for the League One final.

I have seen Gillett on several occasions this season and he hasn't impressed me, I'm afraid.  However, he does seem to be a 'referee-by-numbers' type of official which they seem to like.  So no doubt he will be fast tracked to be another automated SG1 before long.  I just get the impression that he is another who knows the rules but not the game.

Disagree I have seen him a few times and I've been impressed with him.. Always up with play, foul detection very good, not card happy, leaves the game flow.

Whilst I agree Whitestone has been around a while, he is actually a relative newcomer to SG2, joining much later than most.

We have SG2 for a reason you know. Whats the point in having them if we don't trust them

True but these clubs are battling to reach the PL and so should have pl referees doing these games particularly when it’s £110 million for the winning club

The point of SG2 is to try and improve the standard of officiating in more of the games not covered by SG1, although I am not sure that has happened. It is not a case of not trusting SG2, but the general principle is that SG1 referees should be the best in the country. I remember Keith Stroud making an awful decision in the Championship play-offs last season. It could have happened to anyone of course but you'd generally expect a better performance level the higher up you go. I remember Anthony Taylor was superb in Leeds V Derby a few years ago.
SG1 officials were used for all the relegation games on Saturday in Championship, so why not promotion? I think it is reasonable to hold the play-offs in the same regard as a league fixture in the above division which the teams are trying to reach - hence SG2 referees generally doing League 1 play-offs competing for Championship and SG1 normally doing Championship competing for PL.
