Is this a debut?
« on: Tue 29 Oct 2019 20:30 »
Colin Steven is to referee the Premiership game between Hamilton Academical and Ross County this Saturday. Am I right inh thinking that this is his first Premiership middle?

According to Transfermarkt, it's his third Premiership game

Just adding here, as this forum seems to be dead these days.

Chris Graham was given his Premiership debut last weekend for Livingston v Hibs.

Matthew MacDermid has been handed his Premiership debut this weekend for Motherwell v Hearts.

That's a fair few debuts handed out in the last 18 months or so, including a handful of AR debuts also given this season.  Great to see, and hopefully all will do well.

In case anyone wonders why it is great news, I first saw Matthew as a Category 3D::

Wednesday 24th April 2013
South of Scotland League
Crichton 1 v 2 St Cuthbert Wanderers
Matthew McDermid (Motherwell); Finlay McDermid, Michael McDermid

With a ticket for Dumfries in his pocket, JCFC decided to take advantage to see young (20ish) Category 3 Development official Matthew McDermid in action. As is usual he was the only official appointed, so it was a surprise to see three smartly dressed young men arrive. "Young" it must be admitted is stretching things more than a little in one case, but by JCFC's standards it is not inaccurate. A puzzled inquiry of this trio produced an introduction to Finlay and Michael, alias Dad and younger brother. In a reversal of Mr Chapman's farewell photos at Bury/Thackley, the trio had their photo taken to commemorate their first outing together. If any of our Lanarkshire contingent know the clan McDermid, perhaps they could prevail upon them to post the photo on here!

The surroundings were reminiscent of a public school cricket field (although with a very poor square!) and it was a very pleasant place to be. Later in the year, when the midges are more active, that opinion might have to be revised, however. The visitors outplayed their lowly hosts in the first half, but had nothing to show for their pressure. Immediately after the interval, though, a deflected shot looped off the back of a defender and into the net with the keeper stranded. Crichton came back strongly, however, coming close a couple of times before equalising with a header on 63 minutes. In the closing stages, though, it was Wanderers who scored a slightly scruffy winner.

Each assistant had a very early offside. Dad is doubtless not so quick as he once was, but used his experience to compensate well. Michael was perhaps slightly tentative when raising his flag, but got the decisions correct - and was faultless when it came to keeping his flag field side, which has not always been the case in Scotland. As for Matthew (forgive the familiarity in the interests of clarity!) he covers the ground extremely well, with a running style reminiscent of Paul Robertson's glide, and from the early stages he used a greater degree of preemptive patter to control the game than I have sometimes seen in Scotland. The match was a very pleasant affair, Mr McDermid having only to speak officially to three players - two for trips and one for chirruping. He missed nothing, though using advantage appropriately, and I should love to see him again in a slightly more demanding context. I certainly felt that he looked the part. In the brief time that I was speaking with them, they seemed a very pleasant family and I hope that they enjoyed their card-free evening as much as I did. Good luck to Matthew in his career - I shall follow it with interest - and maybe one day we will see Michael in the middle.

PS A little research suggests that Matthew's middle name is Cain. That clearly should have been Abel, though not necessarily with that spelling!

Thanks for sharing.  I did read your posts each week with interest, and see the progress made by officials.

Scotland has too many refs at category 1. With only 6 premiership and 6 championship matches doesn’t make sense to have so many.

I suppose VAR Will be the saving grace

Category 1 officials cover everything from Tiers 1-5.  The Premiership and Championship requires 18 Cat 1 referees every weekend.

Also to remember, Category 1 is split into a Select Group, Performance Group, and Development Group.  Of the Select Group there are only 17, with a further 18 in the Performance Group.  Of the latter, the majority have not yet officiated a Premiership match.  Of the five at Development, they typically only officiate one senior match per month, and will officiate LL, HL, WoSL, and EoSL for the other weeks.

Too few officials and you end up with a serious succession planning problem.  To some extent, the numbers being promoted to Cat 1 and SAR will reflect the SFA's planning for VAR.

The appointments are published each week, and match appointments are tracked by both Soccerway and Soccerbase.  Plenty of Referees and SARs have 40-50 senior appointments this season (not including Tiers 5 or below).  Not sure why you see there being an issue?

I suspect that VAR will require more promotions, not less...

Interesting, to me anyway, that Matthew MacDermid, from Motherwell got his Premier League debut at Motherwell v Hearts which is typically a feisty affair. Also unusual to get a debut in a top six fixture.
And, he did very well and looks a promising official. Happy to see him back anytime based on that display.
