What am I watching?
« on: Wed 06 Apr 2022 13:03 »
As I have now been unceremoniously abandoned at the hotel I’m watching sports in the hotel bar, as you do!!

Not a scooby what I am watching. I think possibly Aussie rules. The pitch looks massive and is round. There’s 4 posts on opposite sides, the middle 2 a bit taller than the outer 2.  Some of the lines are circular, some straight and some are different colours. The ball is like a rugby ball 🏈. The players are wearing sleeveless tops.

There seems to be referees everywhere! 3/4 on the pitch. Several around the outside of the circle. Some are wearing shorts, some trackie bottoms and by the posts there’s another one in a jacket and baseball cap.

It’s bonkers, whatever it is and I’m pretty sure team ref has as many members as the teams!!

Definitely Aussie Rules and is a good game when you get to know the Rules. If you don't know the Rules it can often resemble 'Legalised Thuggery' but it has a large following in Australia and some very large capacity grounds.
Referee's decision used to be final!

It is indeed Australian rules.
3 Field umpires
4 Boundary Umpires and 2 goal umpires. Goal umpires will be in long pants.
They have increased the umpires from 2 to 3 and boundary umpires from 2 to 4 to reflect the increased speed of the match and wanting officials to be  closer to the action. Similar to Gaelic football albeit the field shape, every know and then there is an international series match between the AFL and GAA. Now that is bonkers as it is played on a GAA field.
Play on a cricket oval. the SCG is the smallest ground the AFL is played on.
Legalised thuggery is harsh.

It's more exciting than American FOotball - what people see in that is beyond me!

Wollongong ---I did qualify that by saying that if you didn't know the Rules it could resemble "Legalised Thuggery" ---this was a statement that a friend made a couple of years ago after watching a game with me.

ajb95 ---strangely enough, I also enjoy American Football, however, that came about because I watched many games at a much lower level and got to know tactics etc. whilst in the RAF in Germany for 8 years and spending a lot of time on USAFE bases ---there was nothing else to do, apart from 10-pin Bowling and Iwanted to be outside.

Thank you! It kept me entertained while waiting until it was my turn to travel home!

It was followed on BT sport by some car race, not a clue what that was all about either!! It was ordinary looking cars, a few were Skoda - biggish cars with a thingy on the boot. That didn't keep me entertained!

Hands down the best sport you can ever watch live in any Stadium. I watched a Sydney Swans vs Collingwood game at the SCG a few years back, and it took me a fair while to understand what was going on, but when I did, it was just sensational. A raucous atmosphere and the fact you can have a beer at your seat made it all the more interesting
