Umpires and DRS
« on: Sat 04 Apr 2020 09:45 »
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/28993631/which-umpire-fares-best-reviewed-drs

A very interesting article on how the current elite panel umpires fair with DRS, as well as its two most recent former members, Gould and Ravi.

Whilst there is the huge caviar of it only considering decisions reviewed, these statistics show Michael Gough in a very favourable light. I think he has been a great addition to the panel and will go on to have a very successful career.

At the other end of the spectrum, no surprise to see Joel Wilson down there. However, Nigel Llong and Chris Gaffaney are very close to Wilson in accuracy!

Huge caviar must come from big fishes!

Copied across from the appointments thread as being more relevant perhaps under general discussion:

Article in today's Times with the headline 'Covid will end neutral umpiring but really DRS did that long ago'. This move, if adopted, would obviate the need for elite umpires to travel vast distances in these times of travel difficulties, but it is expected that such a move could become permanent. I assume the umpire operating DRS would still need to be neutral.

Didn't want to start a new thread so have piggy backed this one.  I was very surprised at what I thought were underwhelming performances by Richard Kettleborough and Richard Illingworth in the recent Test series, especially as both have won the David Shepherd Trophy.   I retain a lot of respect for both and it made me wonder whether, just as England perhaps is seen as one of the most difficult countries to bat in, maybe umpiring is more difficult too.

Although both of course still have some county duty I did wonder whether Michael Gough, who had two brilliant series, was more attuned to the level of movement in English conditions.

I wonder which of the emerging English umpires will eventually join the Elite Panel.  I've been interested to see the development of Martin Saggers. After his first year on the county circuit an experienced player told me that he was not highly thought of on the circuit.  He seems to have made great strides since and hasn't looked out of place in the International matches I've seen this summer.

Good interview with Gough mentioned on BBC Sport website.
