Exeter v Saracens Wayne Barnes

Not sure this is the right place to post but it is certainly in the category of other sports.

Caught the TV highlights of this extremely high profile, rather grudge match. I have to say Wayne Barnes refereed superbly. There was a whole lot of tension and simmering stuff going on and he  controlled the match with dignity and absolute control. The personal quality of authority is intrinsic, almost impossible to manufacture and Barnes has it in spades.

I agree with every word and saw most of the game live.  Wayne Barnes has always been a class act but he now also brings the added ingredient of considerable experience to his refereeing.  We are indeed fortunate to have the best two referees in the rugby union world in Barnes and Nigel Owens in England and Wales.
I have heard rumours of impending retirement but I hope this is not true as his considerable expertise would be sadly missed in the game.  However, even though he is still an active referee, he does appear as a pundit and in commentary on televised games from time to time and, like Stuart Cummings in rugby league,  to hear his comments and explanations does add to the enjoyment of the game and gives the viewer a much better apppreciation and understanding of the referee's role in the proceedings.  So, hopefully, this will continue if and when he does decide to hang up the whistle.  It's  also a great pity that someone of his stature cannot be found to perform a similar role in live televised football matches.

Agree with everything said.
When Barnes was promoted to international status some 15 years ago at a very young age I confess I had my reservations but am delighted to say they have not been founded. He is a class act and has been for sometime, a referee who clearly has a great empathy for the players and in turn commands their utmost respect,
I hope he continues for a few years and, subject to England’ s progress in 2023, he must surely be a shoe in already for the World Cup Final.

And of course he is a barrister and so we should not be surprised by greatness  ;)  and, more seriously, an ability to be persuasive.

Truly impressive. Explanations faultless
It was quite an atmosphere but Wayne established and maintained full control.
Interesting to see if Billy V would have been sent off had he not been dragged away.
As an Exeter fan I love having Barnes referee as you know he will make the big decisions (most of which went against us but were entirely correct)
Foley, Ridley and Warren (ARs and TMO) played their part too.
