Kumar Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus
« on: Mon 15 Jul 2019 09:07 »
May I congratulate Kumar and Marais on their contribution to a wonderful day's cricket at Lord's yesterday. I was one of those who questioned the appointments to the World Cup Final, particularly Kumar, and I am happy to say that I was wrong. One or two decisions (I think it was) overturned in 600+ balls plus one non-reviewable error by Erasmus says a lot for their abilities and concentration over 8-9 hours, and their calmness when it came to the Super Over (+ their explanations beforehand to both sides) helped to keep a lid on a potentially explosive situation. Not forgetting the well-used Review Umpire and less-used Reserve, you all deserved your medals after the game. Well done and thank you!

Edit - sorry, this should perhaps have gone under non-footy board, must have been the excitement or sore head this morning. Happy for it to be transferred!

AT, I've posted on the non-footy Appointments thread but perhaps it should have been under General Discussion!

Perhaps I was slightly harsh on the umpires in criticising the mistakes and maybe you are a touch generous.  However, I do agree about their calmness, vital in those circumstances, and the way they handled the 'super over'.  Out of interest, what was the situation regarding short balls/bouncers in the super over.
Neither bowler resorted to it which was pleasing to see.  Would that be something the umpires explained/advised beforehand?

It appears all umpires made an error in law and NZ should have won by 1 run.......

Not necessarily! If they believed the batsmen had crossed, it was an error of judgement

I was interested in the earlier incident when Boult caught Stokes on the long on boundary but then inadvertently stepped onto the boundary rope whilst attempting to release the ball from his grasp. His NZ colleague Guptill was quick to signal 6 runs which was accepted, apparently without question, and a photo in today's Times seems to confirm that Boult still had the ball in his hand when his foot snagged the boundary. However if he had got rid of the ball a fraction of a second earlier, only the runs (? 2) which the batsmen had taken would have been awarded, with Stokes remaining at the crease either way, and the course of cricketing history would almost certainly have been altered for ever. Such were the margins of success and failure yesterday at Lord's.

Not so. If Boult had released the ball a fraction earlier and thrown it to Guptill, as he did, then Stokes would have been out and the two runs would not have counted anyway.
The margin was really as close as that. Interesting that, without TV, none of us would have known when Guptill released the ball in teh overthrow incident. Obviously, there was quite a delay after that so the umpires must have been discussing it, however, if they were not 100% sure then they could do nothing about it. Whether the TV officials should have intervened is debatable because none of the players seemed to be aware of any problem and accepted the decisions of the onfield officials which is the way it always should be whether they be right or wrong!
Referee's decision used to be final!

Thanks Ashington46. I had not realised that Guptill caught the ball when Boult released it from his grasp. Such were the margins in an extraordinary match!

If I may make a comment, if a football referee made such a mistake there would be ructions, rants and sensational comments. Cricket generally accepts that the officials are human and can make mistakes. Football dismays me in so many ways. New Zealand have come out of this with enormous credit and represent what is claimed to be indefinable - the spirit of the game.
I used to umpire a few cricket games and found it impossible to know if batsmen crossed. Could the umpires have referred to third umpire for clarification or was it a case of give what they saw and do not assume or guess!
